The beautiful Yadkin Valley
OPEC is a cartel and therefore illegal if operated in the US. Several of these nations are among our worst enemies; others provide funding or safe harbors for terrorists. Our massive import of crude is a major cause of our world trade imbalance. The recent price drop of crude comes not from good will towards consumers, but to stifle the exploitation of recently discovered deposits in US territory- those in the Gulf of Mexico alone upping our proven reserves by 50%. This newest deposit is economically viable at $65 per barrel, hence the current OPEC price around $60.

Let’s add a $60 per barrel tariff to OPEC imports to encourage energy independence for America. $120 per barrel crude would stimulate market forces for domestic production and alternative energies such as clean coal, wood-based ethanol, bio-diesel and hydrogen from nuclear power.

To offset high consumer prices, the plan should include a corresponding tax rebate for energy consumed, making the tariff revenue neutral.

Not a bad idea and I think you're right on why the oil prices have dropped recently. There is something to be said for using up another countries natural resources before you use up your own though !

Interesting---you think out petroleum supply is inexhaustable ?
There are very few resources that are not inexhaustable, as long as we have the imagination to find new ways to exploit them, or to substitute for them when and if they ever do run out.

For example: petroleum. We have more proven oil reserves worldwide now than at any time in the past, because we are constantly advancing the technology for survey and drilling. When we eventually do run out of the stuff, we will substitute with coal, natural gas, ethanol, biodiesel or hydrogen (from nukes). The "resource" is the energy we need, not the grease we pump out of the ground.

I can make the same case for lumber, water, gold, deer, rubber or glass; virtually any resource.
