On a hill
As I have said, my son is a Repiratory care Specialist at a major childrens hospital, and my daughter is a respiratory therapist at a major metro hospital.
She calls after almost every day she works. She gets upset, she is afraid for herself also obviously.
Of the five ICU departments they have, 3 are now all CV-19 patients. Two of their floors are now CV-19 patients. All have advanced cases because they do not accept patients unless their condition is advanced.
People in their 20s and 30s are the worse. It seems that if you are of that age, and you get advanced symptoms, you actually have less of a chance of survival than someone older with advanced symptoms.
She cries daily now, they have to reuse masks over and over, the what ifs when they have to change out of their clothes into their street clothes to go home...what if they didn't get totally clean, what if.... they pass it to their spouse or child...what if....
When a patient is dying, they can only choose one family member to say their goodbyes to. And they are in the room when they do that.

Fuck.

Your daughter and your son are today's heroes.

Many are trying to downplay this thing, and they're much the opposite.

Let's hope your kids stay safe.

This is similar to war, when those on the front risk death. Those behind the lines can only give the moral and psychological support they are capable of as aid to those fighting for us all. All the present, binary political bickering only saps the nation's strength. Those like your children need and deserve the little effort it takes to just stand solidly behind them, encourage them, and take the steps necessary to alleviate their burden.

I'm so sorry to hear this. How awful.

I wonder if we are seeing the ravages of vaping and pot smoking among these young people. We didn't know, even a year ago, how terrible vaping was for lungs. Add that in with this infection and I imagine it's just awful

Victim blaming..?

Nurses have their backs to the wall
Do their jobs without ppes and n 95 masks
While trying to protect their families..it is more than a rock and hard place...it is a hell they never could envision

I hear the same thing from my friends that work on the front lines. They are used to dealing with death. But not on this scale. This is a war.
All you can do is to listen and try to be there for them.

Getting the front line responders all the PPE they need should be priority #1.

I am concerned about PTSD for them after this is over.
That may well be an element we will have to deal with. A decent healthcare system would cover required professional psychological aid. Perhaps this situation will provoke a more serious look at things and a more realistic approach.

Perhaps it will provoke a revolution. God knows we need one.

Absolutely, but between the ears, not in the streets.

She has seen death many-many times, but this is different. These are not sick people. They are you and me...they are fine...then not fine. She is used to making people better, or at least alleviating their suffering. But with CV-19, they just get worse and worse and then die. And for no apparent reason, why does one person get better - and another dies...even though the one that got better might be older with some health issues... but the person who dies was 20 years younger and no apparent health issues they can detect.
I myself am having trouble sleeping, she calls around 8pm. And it leaves my head spinning. In my minds eye she is still that little kid. She is in REAL danger and I can't do anything.

I thought that way too. Not anymore. The only way is getting in the streets.

Such revolutions have so far only resulted in revolving who is dominating, not in stopping domination.

Your solution won’t ever lead to change.

i think what is hard on medical workers...people are dying alone...no family support...nurses are unable to care and comfort for dying patients...which has resulted in long married couples making pacts to stay home period...no hospital...the fear of dying alone is a horrible image

keep taking her calls...we know you will...you are a dad...we cant prop her up but we can prop you up....let us know after her calls....i want to keep up with her and you...we are here for ya...regardless...and as always you are most welcome in the flame zone...yes we are horrible people but we do laugh a lot....mostly at others misery but laughter is laughter...and at this point we all need it...but please keep us up to date...
