To date we have always had another election and the power pendulum usually swings back the other way.

Neither side seems to know that- politics means you have to accept what you don't like in order to get what you do like- I had a neighbor one time who said the US is amazing in that it keeps going in spite of itself- that's true, but, according to History all empires fall- it's not if, but when.

That is true. Even democracies (or in our case, representative republics) fail once people realize they can vote themselves access to their neighbor's wallet. When the hyenas outnumber the gazelles, things get bad.
