Suggestion: Paid Private Forums

A suggestion for USMB to consider. Could be profitable since all the infrastructure is already here and just some programming changes.

Background:
I am leading a large group of people who are organizing and trying to navigate the complexities of employer-mandated COVID testing and vaccines. I don't want to use a private group on Facebook, MeWe, or Gab. We are using personal email. It's kind of a mess since each thread results in countless emails.

It would have been great if I could have started a private forum on USMB and sent invitation links to interested people, where they could read and contribute to well-organized threads.

Suggestion:
Maybe you could consider private forums which have a subscription fee (say $25 or $50 per year for up to 100 members or whatever).

Forums would be completely private, not displayed to non-members, unsearchable by non-members, available by invitation only, membership requires approval, etc.

Probably like the moderator forum y'all mods might have already.

Just an idea. Could be win-win. I'd be surprised if you had not already considered this suggestion though. I realize there are some issues with this, as some people might try to use such a forum for nefarious purposes, but other platforms have this capability available for free.

We have already the debate now forum here. That´s enough. Your idea opposes the very sense of a message board. For real, make a private group on Facebook, that is what you actually want.

Get a site from GoDaddy and set up a message board using Joomla.

As for your on-topic comment, for which you for some reason desired to bring up your porn addiction, if the board is already profitable, and the infrastructure is largely in place, bringing in more revenue naturally results in more profits.

Again, I think you have not fully thought about things before posting your simplified thoughts. Other platforms provide this service for free.

Thanks for the feedback. I think my suggestion is probably quite a bit different than that though. I am suggesting that someone could pay to have a private forum, like for the purpose I mentioned.

Others might want one to have private discussions about an upcoming wedding or other event.

Yes, some might even use it to discuss politics with only like-minded individuals because they want privacy and not public display of their viewpoints for keyboard warriors to launch insults at, but they would have to pay for this privilege.

I don't really see it competing substantially with the public forums, but I must admit that if there was a private forum for Right-Wingers, and the forum leader asked for a donation to join to help cover costs, I would consider doing that.

I don't think many people would actually pay to join such a forum, as there are so many other options available, but in the case I was suggesting, I would pay to host a forum for which I could invite my colleagues to join for free. Depending on the size of the membership, my price would increase accordingly.

I realize this is not a million dollar idea, but USMB seems to have rather modest fundraising needs, and this idea could potenially contribute substantially.

The platform at USMB is reliable, well-run, and has great and easy-to-use features. That is why it appeals to me for this application.
