American college students are hooked on cell phones, social media and the Internet and showing symptoms similar to drug and alcohol addictions, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Maryland who asked 200 students to give up all media for one full day found that after 24 hours many showed signs of withdrawal, craving and anxiety along with an inability to function well without their media and social links.

My son and his friends tried to partake in a "digital cleanse" - no tech communications for two weeks. He lasted a weekend.

Imagine the professors and high school teachers trying to compete with that. Maybe it's time for jamming.

I just really admitted to myself that I have become internet addicted.

It all started out when I was too ill to involve myself with real life.

In addition to being sick I also had no money, so the net was at least one way I could keep my mind occupied,

So naturally, I thought that when those conditions changed, I'd go back to dealing with people in the real world as I once had.

Not so, now.

Turns out that all these years of I-Life have made me unwilling to put up with the crap that FTF with real people in the real world dishes out.

Now I have to force myself to FTF with most people. I am less tolerant of social contact with the average person than I ever was.

Seriously, this discovery about what I have become is rather recent and I am stunned to discover what a lazy assed reclusive sod I've become.

Hopefully the summer will seduce me to get reinvolved with human beings and interests I once had, but had to give up.

Incidently, I'm not writing this to you guys for your benefit.

I'm posting this to force me not to lie to myself about what I'm becoming.

The first step to dealing with a problem is admitting that you've got it, and all that, if you know what I mean.

So thanks to ya'll for being witness to this self revelation.

It is never enough to admit you've got a problem sotto voce and only to yourself.

You've got to share it with others to make it really real, I think.

Where else are you going to get the good porn?

This goes in waves all the time. "College Students are ________"

It is time to cut apron strings, people. Internet is not as fun as spouse. Not as serious as work.

And on colleges today, the internet is a huge part of the learning process. Online is where most of the really good information is to be found. Where I go to school, each class has its message board. (Teacher moderated, unfortunately) So you can get some really cool interaction on line that is almost as good as class time.

I have to admit that i find E learning pretty useless. But it does give an interesting way to be on good terms with other students.

Lectures are online.
Homework is online.
Friends are online.
Resources for papers are online.
Event planning is online.
Banking, shopping, and paychecks are online.
Ordering pizza is online.

A college student who isn't internet-addicted is likely drinking himself to death, the only thing that you still do in-person. These researchers are stuck in the 20th century...

As someone who is taking a online class next semester, participates in social networking websites, and has professors put materials online, I can attest to this.

While I am most likely an internet addict as a college student, it's only because the majority of things you have to do now are online. Outside of classes, exercising and hanging out with friends, everything is online now.

Edit: To add to that, majority of papers must be written on one's computer now.

I actually read this article...and they wonder why the MSM is dying?

Susan Moeller, the study's project director and a journalism professor at the university, said many students wrote about how they hated losing their media connections, which some equated to going without friends and family.
If you're away from home, and always working, how do you contact your friends and family?

Cell phones! Where's my PhD in sociology?

"Texting and IM-ing my friends gives me a constant feeling of comfort," wrote one of the students, who blogged about their reactions. "When I did not have those two luxuries, I felt quite alone and secluded from my life."
Maybe because he couldn't communicate with his ultra-busy friends and family?

Few students reported watching TV news or reading a newspaper.
Because TV News and Newspapers are written by fucktards like this journalist.

The American Psychiatric Association does not recognize so-called Internet addiction as a disorder.
Halfway down the page, you admit that your headline is hyped bullshit?

But it seems to be an affliction of modern life. In one extreme example in South Korea reported by the media, a couple allegedly neglected their three-month-old daughter, who died of malnutrition, because they were on the computer for up to 12 hours a day raising a virtual child.
"While I admit the premise of this article is bullshit, there is a non-student halfway around the world who did bad things because of the internet. This must mean that the internet is a blight upon our society, which every newspaper needs to write about!"

Perhaps we could find a journalist who murdered somebody, and conclude journalists are a threat to modern society?

Students in the Maryland study also showed no loyalty to news programs, a news personality or news platform. They maintained a casual relationship to news brands, and rarely distinguished between news and general information.
So that's why MSNBC and NYT are dying?

"They care about what is going on among their friends and families and even in the world at large," said Ph.D. student Raymond McCaffrey who worked on the study. Loyalty "does not seemed tied to any single device or application or news outlet."
"Despite our bullshit headline, and irrelevant anecdotes, a researcher thinks this is a good thing!"

---

Thank you, MSNBC, for wasting 10 minutes of my life with your bullshit.
