....I've linked this many times on many subjects--whenever a WHITE does something--race is mentioned and headlined...usually when a BLACK murders a white BECAUSE of race, race is not mentioned.....etc etc

You know, Jim, this isn't centrally about "facts". Literature is how a society generates a narrative about itself, learns about itself, self-examines, and / or learns something about where it may be heading. It would be scurrilous in the extreme if these endeavors were to remain reserved to one particular group that qualifies by nothing so much as by control over the levers of power, economically, culturally, politically, financially, militarily and on and on. The times, they are a-changing, and it's about time even universities got the message, even if you still don't.

It would be astonishing to learn that, say, in math, notable contributions by women and minorities were excluded. You might argue, so what? Math doesn't influence life all that much. Literature, however, does, and hearing / reading voices from different, and widely differing, societal backgrounds, picking up widely different issues from widely differing perspectives, is an asset. I would expect students of literature to be exposed to a wide spectrum of writers to make sure they got at least a taste of what is out there. To keep that exposure confined to a narrow group of authors just because it's always been that way is to deprive students of the wider horizon only a broader reading canon can provide. All else is narrow-minded, self-induced intellectual poverty.

The simple fact is that for most of history, women and minorities were excluded from producing literature at a high level. Those barriers are being torn down, and I’m sure 100 years from now, the canon will look different than it does today as females and nonwhites produce more and more works.

But demanding that works be included and excluded simply because of race and sex is by definition racist and sexist, and panders to those who aren’t good enough to produce works based solely on merit.
