He just pointed out the reason why the federal government should be taking the lead in obtaining and distributing protective gear. Each state should get what can be obtained by looking at the severity of the cases so far and population. Schumer is right in that a non-partisan person should be appointed to oversee this.

It is for the states but the Federal Govt will divvy it up as needed. If New Mexico needs 100 and they get 200 then the excess is not coming back as states hoard just in case. In this environment the federal government wants to have its own stockpile to help states that need it in an emergency.

The federal government should be obtaining and distributing badly needed protective gear for several reasons. First, it is better for the one federal government to take charge of this rather than 50 state governments working against each other and maybe even bidding against one another. The federal government can invoke the Defense Production Act which states cannot.

The fact is that the supplies that the federal government has belong to the people of the United States. They should be distributed to the states as well as federal workers. Trump tried to make major budget cuts in the office that manages the stockpile that was so draconian that even Republicans rejected them.
