A proper response is to point out that political parties tend to be opportunistic, and change with current political climates.

Were there democrats in southern states after LBJ that were for civil rights?
The answer to both is yes, so your characterization of democrats as racist is invalid.

Whether or not we like Islam, the Iranians clearly DO like Islam, at least compared to a western imposed dictatorship of the Shah, so anyone supporting democracy has to support the rebellion in Iran against the US backed Shah.

For example, in the 1850s Lincoln created the republican party as a progressive and liberal party opposed to slavery and abuses of individual liberties by the wealthy.
But after the Civil War, under Grant, the republicans turned into the corrupt party of the wealthy abusers.
That has never really changed again, and under Trump, the republicans only took on a slight populists image. When you look at the tax cuts for the wealthy and the deficit spending for the military, the republicans still are not progressive or liberal anymore.
In contrast, the democrats switch back and forth far more often.
While democrats started out incredibly conservative in the 1850s, Teddy Roosevelt and FDR were some of the most liberal and progressive presidents since Jefferson.
But democrats swing rapidly, depending on who contributes to their campaigns.
Johnson was no liberal or progressive. Not only was he willing to murder Vietnamese for war profits, but his civil rights support was actually just a way to buy Black votes.

The reason MOST of that is wrong is that democrats that were against civil rights for Blacks, were only a small minority of the democratic party, and only in southern states.
