One of the most admirable city states of ancient Greece was communist.

They divided their land all equally among themselves so that every spartan citizen had an equal share of property.

They had a mixed economy over all. The perioikos were like free bourgeoisie.

And then the Helots were like serfs.

But as for Sparta herself she practiced communism.

Most likely all of the lacadaemonians emulated it to some extent.

Intellectual discussion just for the sake of it.

And here I thought you were speaking about Sparta, Illinois.
It's a monarchy....of
anarcho-syndicalist communes
Sparta wasn't actually a monarchy.

The two kings didn't make laws.

They were inherited commanders at war.
The 300 Spartans were last seen in Champaign, Illinois...
....
What makes me better than you is I don't troll your posts
The Spartans had one weakness with their form of government a social strata, do you know what it was?

Sparta had a deeply entrenched caste system. One of the fundamental beliefs at the core of Spartan society was that people were not equal. That only the most fit were entitled to the full gamut of even basic rights. This belief was so deeply held that the Spartans practiced habitual infanticide so as to breed a superior race of human beings. Spartans were so staunch in their belief that lower castes could never attain equality that they allowed their society to wither away through attrition than to loosen their stringent adherence to their caste system.

In other words, never in history has a society been more opposed to the fundamental defining characteristic of communism: That all classes in society must be eliminated.

Which was their weakness......

*facepalm*

Queen Elizabeth does not make laws, yet the UK is still a monarchy.

The Kings of Sparta were military generals, religious leaders, and judges. Over time, the powers of the Kings were gradually transferred to the Ephors and the Kings became figureheads. Much like.....that's right, Queen Elizabeth.

Nonetheless, Sparta was a Kingdom.

I don't see anything admirable about SPARTA-----it was not
exactly communist in the way communist ideologues like to
describe communism-------it was fascist socialist

.

It seems to me they were more like Nazi Germany. However, they did hold the distinction of having the first professional military. Before the Spartans all militaries were composed of militias.

A while back on African American forum on topix a black poster was trying claim the Spartans as a black people until I pointed out that the Spartans had some negative social morays by modern standards. They tolerated both homosexuality, pedophilia and some children were beaten to death in military training and they were perhaps the worse slave masters in history. They used the lives of their slaves to train their young men in killing. Some older Spartan continued the practice, after they were trained, for sport and to keep Helots in state of constant fear.

I think their greatest weakness was their cult of death; they took death before dishonor to an extreme to the point that their best men were always killed and their population fighting men continued to declined. By the time the Thebans liberated their slaves, the population was down to less than ten thousand.

They didn’t Farm their land their slave did. Spartan men did nothing, but train for and fight wars.

Sparta was one of the inspirational models for fascism.

Early influences that shaped the ideology of fascism have been dated back to ancient Greece. The political culture of ancient Greece under Pericles and particularly the ancient Greek city state of Sparta with its emphasis on rule by a minority of elites and on racial purity were admired by the Nazis. The Spartans were emulated by quasi-fascist 4th of August Regime of Ioannis Metaxas called for Greeks to wholly commit themselves to the nation with self-control as the Spartans had done. Nazi Führer Adolf Hitler in emphasized that Germany should adhere to Hellenic values and culture – particularly that of ancient Sparta. He rebuked potential criticism of Hellenic values being non-German by emphasizing the common Aryan race connection with ancient Greeks, saying in Mein Kampf: "One must not allow the differences of the individual races to tear up the greater racial community".
