The Kings of Sparta were military generals, religious leaders, and judges. Over time, the powers of the Kings were gradually transferred to the Ephors and the Kings became figureheads. Much like.....that's right, Queen Elizabeth.

Nonetheless, Sparta was a Kingdom.

I don't see anything admirable about SPARTA-----it was not
exactly communist in the way communist ideologues like to
describe communism-------it was fascist socialist

It seems to me they were more like Nazi Germany. However, they did hold the distinction of having the first professional military. Before the Spartans all militaries were composed of militias.

A while back on African American forum on topix a black poster was trying claim the Spartans as a black people until I pointed out that the Spartans had some negative social morays by modern standards. They tolerated both homosexuality, pedophilia and some children were beaten to death in military training and they were perhaps the worse slave masters in history. They used the lives of their slaves to train their young men in killing. Some older Spartan continued the practice, after they were trained, for sport and to keep Helots in state of constant fear.

I think their greatest weakness was their cult of death; they took death before dishonor to an extreme to the point that their best men were always killed and their population fighting men continued to declined. By the time the Thebans liberated their slaves, the population was down to less than ten thousand.
