Hey, nobody is blaming him for retiring. I personally think that when you hit your 70's that is the time to take it easy and watch the world go by.

But, I do think that because he's gained a reputation as the swing vote, and knows that there is a very good chance for some of Mueller's investigation to show up before the SCOTUS, so he wants no part of it and is leaving before it happens.

If there was a decision against Trump, and it was 5 to 4, Kennedy would be nailed for being the swing vote.

Since there were no Clintons involved, it's pretty obvious that there was no intimidation or pressure for him to resign.

There clearly was a quiet campaign by Republicans to convince Kennedy to retire before the midterms. McConnell earlier this year suggested any judges thinking of retiring should do so before the midterms. That clearly was aimed at Kennedy.
