Solving a mystery: Why McConnell didn't kill the infrastructure bill

So a 1.2 TRILLION spending bill was "modest?" And it leaves taxes alone while having several tax raises within it?
It's modest relative to the $3.5 trillion bill the Dems want to pass next. As the OP's link suggests, passing the cheaper bipartisan bill makes it harder for the democrats to pass the larger one, cuz if they do that then they look like huge spendthrifts that I think would cost them next year. This way, the GOP looks like they compromised and cooperated with the Dems, making themselves look better than if they appeared to be total obstructionists. As a fiscal conservative, I don't like it cuz there's too much democrat pork, but - as they say, elections do have consequences.

Republicans didn't have the political clout or media support to kill what would be the Biden socialist showpiece. Even if it's an abject failure like so many gigantic democrat plans, the media will pretend that it's a victory.

They didn't need it. Once Sinema indicated there was no way she was voting for the $3.5T billion Biden had no way to get it through the Senate on reconcilliation. Schumer had no choice but to cave if they wanted anything other than a big humiliating defeat.

Thanks, ya, I know, I read the article.

The answer is very simple: The Swamp is deep and wide.

When Democrats do evil things most of the time they are aided to some degree by a few weak minded Republicans. This filthy ass bill is no exception.

The right’s unwarranted opposition to the legislation is another example of conservatives putting partisan politics before what’s best for the country.

Conservatives wanted the legislation to fail to deny President Biden fulfilling a campaign promise, no matter how much harm done to America.
