Solar vs natural gas what do you think?

Not saying solar is bad. it helps but it cannot replace conventional power plants at this time and much better to use gas than coal. Thats what i was trying to say.

Cooking with gas is a different skill than cooking with electricity it doesn't matter where the electricity comes from- on the other hand, a gas heater leaves condensation and an electric heater dries out the air- solar is more expensive and has more repairs required- the panels don't have a very good shelf life- if one chooses that, fine- it is their choice- if they don't have a choice it matters-

Eilat is not a small town. For it to be 100% solar powered during the day is impressive. I do not agree with his condemnation of gas power. a gas fired plant is not nearly as polluting as coal and solar cannot produce the power at this time to replace conventional power plants www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7YINRaEeNw
I don't see it as an either or thing. Both have pros and cons. One downside of gas is that it is a finite resource.

Natural gas is a combustible mixture of hydrocarbon gases. While natural gas is formed primarily of methane, it can also include ethane, propane, butane and pentane. The composition of natural gas can vary widely, but below is a chart outlining the typical makeup of natural gas before it is refined.

Typical Composition of Natural Gas
MethaneCH4
70-90%
EthaneC2H6
0-20%
PropaneC3H8
ButaneC4H10
Carbon DioxideCO2
0-8%
OxygenO2
0-0.2%
NitrogenN2
0-5%
Hydrogen sulphideH2S

Rare gasesA, He, Ne, Xe

Why are we concerned about it?
If methane leaks into the air before being used — from a leaky pipe, for instance — it absorbs the sun's heat, warming the atmosphere. For this reason, it's considered a greenhouse gas, like carbon dioxide.

Why is it as critical to address as carbon dioxide?
In the first two decades after its release, methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide. We must address both types of emissions if we want to reduce the impact of climate change.

Ask again after your pipes freeze

Solar would be an excellent opinion in Eilat to subsidize your electricity production ... just keep the refrigerator doors closed at night ...

On the other hand, just a half mile away, the Saudis are torching natural gas as a waste product ... easy peasy generating electricity from that ...

We have much natural gas from the sea and i am glad its replacing coal. Gas is much cleaner than coal.

You can't plug your coffee pot into a solar array without an inverter and other electronic gizmos.. So much easier to plug into the grid.

Really?

*****CHUCKLE*****

:)

Wind solar and batteries will never be able to meet our current demands for electricity never mind the increased demand as we wean off fossil fuels

They could and largely will. But technology continues to advance. For example, fission driving has been found to be just dumb. By mixing apparently any radioactive material with molten salts, electric power can now be generated from direct heating while rendering former waste isotopes less radioactive and without critical fission (nor fusion for that matter).

You can plug your solar array and inverter into the grid too. The grid needs a lot of work these days however. The noise generated from increasing replacement of delta with "Y" connected transformers and from increasing electronic loading is limiting signal detection and communications already.

No they won't.

Don't forget that since windmills only produce 25% of their rated capacity that in reality 4 times as many have to be installed. And let's not ignore the environmental disaster that is rare earth mining for the magnets in wind mills for which we are 100% dependent on foreign countries.

Batteries are ridiculously expensive and degrade with use.

The copper for the wires from all these remote wind and solar farms will be extremely expensive as well

By ignoring nuclear power and next generation LFTR reactor tech we are guaranteeing that we will never stop using fossil fuels.

:sigh2: You like to imagine a lot of stuff being "ignored" while glossing over all costs of continuing to rely upon fossil fuels. Leveraging the Sun's energy directly obviously beats destroying our biosphere by digging up and burning long buried shit. Yes, even at "25% of their rated capacity" - a pointless taking point. And, like it or not, magnets shall continue to be made and reused for windmill generators and IC engine starter motors. Batteries? We have barely scratched the surface..

I never mentioned the output of solar panels but then again they only work half the time don't they?

It's the windmills you Don Quixote types love so much that only produce 25% of their rated capacity so in reality you will need to install and spend 400% more than you think.
