I don't know if this is within the perameters of your request, but my 2nd grader is also into science and he is great with his hand, loves building...but he has really gotten into Harry Potter. Read several, and checks the library for others when we go there.

My 5th grader has recently read "Lost Horizons", "The Big Sky," all of Sherlock Holmes, and we just picked out "Good-Bye, Mr. Chips."

And she seemed to like "The Gladiator," by Philip Wylie, which, some say, is the progenitor of the Superman comic books.

Best of luck.

I'm not a parent so feel free to ignore this but.... my cousin has 8 year old twins..... They totally love science stuff and she got them a book that has pop up models of the inventions of Leonardo di Vinci.

Also, one called 'Life in a Rotten Log' or something like that.

thank you very much. since you still have kids near my stepsons age I will return some suggestions to you:

the magic tree house series (all 40+ of them) are extremely good and educational. each book is centered around some culture or idea in the past and after reading the book your kid will be an "expert" on them.

for your kid that likes science you should check out these basher books, they are really educational too and a lot of fun to read:

Thanks shadow.

having a kid makes me really appreciate libraries. If I had to buy all the books he reads I would need a second job. I currently am supporting the library a little bit at a time with donations, but I hope by next year I can give a good chunk of money often to keep it growing. The library here is the size of a wal-mart and its childrens section is bigger than many other full libraries around here

I took my youngest to the Library to get her own Library card a few summers ago...she loves it. I think it's the whole "idea" of the library she likes, picking books, checking them out etc.. She doesn't feel the same about going to the book stores. Plus, the library sometimes has other activities going on that are fun for kids...puppets,magicians...stuff like that.

There's also an updated version (I haven't personally checked this one out).

When you mentioned The Magic Tree House series, it made me think of another my daughter loved when she was in grade school (might be too young for your son..not sure).

The Andrew Lost series...about a boy who invented gadgets that can go awry. The first being about his shrinking machine...they have to be read in order though because each has a cliff hanger at the end.

These two are oldies, but my siblings and I loved them:
