Afghanistan did exactly what it was designed to do. Secure the drug trade for the cartels and establish a US backed military presence close to Pakistan, especially through its proxy force, the Afghan National Army.

The Taliban only control a couple of large villages. Their territory in Afghanistan is virtually nonexistent. Their numbers however, are pre-invasion.
