Depends on what you mean. Old style conservatives -- socially moderate, fiscally interested in balanced budgets and and balanced between capitalism and social nets, you'll fit it.

Modern conservatives -- religiously intolerant, run up the debt tax cutters, pro-rich, probably not.

why not? There have always been conservatives in the Democratic party.

That's not a bad idea. I used to think there were conservatives in the Democrat Party until the Keynesian 'bail-out' votes. They could use a few. To me, the Republican Party is mostly a bunch of LBJ-style Democrats.

That's not a bad idea. I used to think there were conservatives in the Democrat Party until the Keynesian 'bail-out' votes. They could use a few. To me, the Republican Party is mostly a bunch of LBJ-style Democrats.

LBJ helped purge the Dem party of unrepentet racists who enmass defected to the GOP...and who formed the base of Nixon's (Reagan's and Bush's\) southern strategy.

why not? There have always been conservatives in the Democratic party.

Yes, there have. They are called "Blue Dog" Democrats. The term "Southern Democrat" once meant quite "socially conservative" as well.

Maybe the Blue Dogs could recruit what conservatives there may be left in the Republican Party and form a new party: The Blue Dog Party.

I kind of like that idea. Of course, there still is one conservative party left they could all join: The Libertarian Party.
