Plus, I made several visits to hospice as a friend of mine wasted away and died of pancreatic cancer. For the last month of his life, he could not speak at all. That doesn't mean that RBG could not speak.

The term "died surrounded by her family" isn't meant to imply that the family had formed a circle around the death bed and every member was within earshot when she took her last breath.
