THE Scottish Football Association has been criticised by human rights group Amnesty International over its “enhanced relationship” with the Qatari Football Association.
During a trip to Qatar last week for an under-15s tournament, SFA president Campbell Ogilvie said that he hoped the two associations would “work together in the future.”
Saud Abdulaziz Al Mohannadi of the Qatari FA said the two countries would have an “enhanced relationship ... in order to improve the football system in both Qatar and Scotland.”
Siobhan Reardon, Amnesty International’s programme director in Scotland, warned the SFA about the connection. She said: “Qatar returned to the headlines this week with news that the SFA have agreed a partnership with the 2022 World Cup hosts; and reports that the tournament will be moved to November in efforts to make conditions more comfortable for players and fans, as well as avoiding potential health risks.
"It is a pity Fifa and the Qatari authorities did not consider the comfort and very real health hazards affecting the thousands of migrant workers building the infrastructure for the tournament – many have been seriously injured or even died working in appalling conditions.”
