Senate GOP proposes $618 Billion Coronavirus Relief Bill ahead of Biden meeting

A group of 10 GOP senators unveiled an estimated $618 billion coronavirus proposal on Monday ahead of a meeting with President Biden to discuss relief legislation. The group will meet with Biden and Vice President Harris at 5 p.m., according to the White House's schedule.

The group includes GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Bill Cassidy (La.), Mitt Romney (Utah), Rob Portman (Ohio), Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.), Todd Young (Ind.), Jerry Moran (Kan.), Mike Rounds (S.D.) and Thom Tillis (N.C.).

The proposal includes $160 billion in pandemic response funding including protective equipment and more money for vaccine distribution. It also extends the $300 per week federal unemployment benefit through June 30.

The bill includes a $1,000 direct payment, compared to the $1,400 direct payment in Biden's plans, with $500 for adult dependents and children. The proposal also lowers the income cap for qualifying for the direct assistance.

Under previous coronavirus bills, individuals who make up to $75,000 would receive the check, with the amount of the payment phasing out after that. But under the GOP proposal individuals who make up to $40,000 would get a $1,000 check, with the amount of the check phasing out altogether at $50,000.

It also includes $20 billion in additional funding for schools, $20 billion in child care funding, an additional $50 billion in small business aid, $12 billion for nutrition assistance and $4 billion for behavioral health resources.

Notice there is nothing in there for the minimum wage increase, which has diddly squat to do with the COVID Relief, and in fact would do damage to the eventual effort to reopen small businesses and startups. Also no aid to the states and cities. I think this is a good proposal that definitely shows far more fiscal sanity than what the democrats want to do.
They will meet somewhere in the middle 1.3 trillion is my guess

imo the dems need to get at worst a 70-30 compromise or just keep all their non covid proposals and pass it. They can still do reconcillation at least once more on taxes.

The gop lost an election and attacked the capitol. That's not a place to bargain from.
Following a black Prog woman ends up in death if the payments stop.

Incoming Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden: "The package outlined by 10 Senate Republicans is far too small to provide the relief the American people need."

The second stimulus of $600 was a slap in the face to Americans needing relief.

The Republican proposal is another slap in the face
Why? Those of us who kept working don't need the welfare, so go get a job and support yourself for a change.

The Repubs want to tell the US people no, but yes to their corporate masters.

I’d like to see if Republicans are willing to actually bargain
They are offering one third, not much of an offer when Dems can pass it without them
The dems not only can pass it without the gop, the gop LOST THE SENATE because the gop itself wouldn't pass TRUMP"S proposal for 1400 stimulus! I think the gop's had that issue decided for them. LOL Whether it's good or bad …. it's done. I mean if the gop wants to cut off the stimulus at 150,000 maybe the dems would go along. But if the dems cave, they pretty much screw over Warnock and Oloff.

I think the only leverage the gop has here is …. time. Biden can do emergency spending like Trump did. Tomorrow. If the wall was an emergency, 500K dead Americans can pass the Sup Ct test. Pelosi can get a reconciliation bill on taxes too pretty quick. But I don't think Biden wants to open the SALT, Obamacare and gop income tax cut cans right now.

So the gop should take their medicine on stimulus. Hopefully the gop can get the dems to cut out the non stimulus stuff. I don't like it, but I can't see the dems caving on aid to state and local govts.

State gov aid needs to be in there. Local govs have been decimated. Min wage doesn’t need to be in there.

I think the GOP will go to 1.2-1.5 they put out 600 as a start point and know they will need to meet in the middle to make a deal

McConnell wasn't even going to have a vote on the $600 but Perdue and Loeffler were trying to stick with Trump who wanted $1400

Yes it must be big enough to keep them in hiding at home from the virus and sucking off the government teat.
So you'll be turning down your check?
There are tens of millions of people and then tens of millions of more who never earned anything and will get a check. They won't turn it down.

There are foreign nations, like Socialist Venezuela, who have not and will not turn it down.

The Government still has $90 BILLION in COVID-19 Relief Funds from the last bill the government hasn't even spent yet.

$25 Billion for RENT ASSISTANCE was signed in December - it has not been spent / distributed. He wants $25 Billion MORE for RENT ASSISTANCE in ths latest bill...along with more massive foreign aid.
