"Older, disabled and blind Americans in all 50 states and the District of Columbia can have access to SSI benefits but not in Puerto Rico, which is a U.S. territory. The justices said they would hear an appeal, first filed by the Trump administration, of a lower-court ruling that held that residents of the U.S. territory should have the same access to SSI benefits as older, disabled and blind Americans in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The administration argues that a pair of 40-year-old Supreme Court decisions already upheld the federal law that created SSI and excluded Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories from it."

When you already hate a government program like Social Security but don't have the will of the American people on your side to end it; because of how popular that program is -- next best thing is to try to prevent as many people as possible from receiving it. Who are the majority of those caught up in this mess?? -- People who lived in the states; paid into SS; have full eligibility for benefits...then retire to places like PR and suddenly, they don't deserve benefits they themselves paid into? And for what? Some arcane remnants of colonialism that punishes US territories....

If the Supreme Court decides to side with the government and cut off SSI benefits for residents in PR; this will definitely add more fuel to the fire for Puerto Rico and DC statehood. Hopefully this prompts Congress to write some legislation to correct this problem -- unless the GOP fearmongers about this and tries to convince people that "brown illegals in Puerto Rico are stealing tax dollars in the form of SSI benefits"

There are more then 12 million people collecting SSDI. Several times over the years I have read that half of the people collecting those benefits are of questionable illnesses and disabilities. True or not? We have a lot of corruption in our nation. And many people are corrupted also to all levels. The Disability laws we have passed has cost the nation trillions of dollars over the years in everything it touches. And there are people who are not even thankful for it but feel it is owed. Many are hired and are not very good at what they do. Given priority for many things. It has become more then an inconvenience for those who have aches and pains themselves but are secondary to those who get benefits in all ways. Everywhere we go.

You are confusing Social Security Retirement--a program that employees and employers support with contributions and Supplemental Security Income--a program funded by taxpayers. People in Puerto Rico do receive Social Security Retirement https://assets.aarp.org/rgcenter/econ/ss_facts_05_pr.pdf The difference between the two programs is explained here. https://www.ssa.gov/sf/FactSheets/aianssavsssifinalrev.pdf Many people, myself included, confuse the two programs.

I imagine you glossed over a few things. You can get SSI benefits if you qualify wherever you live. There is already a program for those blind and otherwise disabled who live in US territories.

In Greece on the island of Zakynthos they found 350 residents collecting government entitlements for being blind, among them taxi drivers, cashiers and so on. Seems their was a crooked ophthalmologists who issued certificates for a fee. The media labelled it the Island of the Blind, like something out of the Odyssey. Puerto Rico would make a perfect "Island of the Blind",

Taxpayers like the people I just discussed in the OP...

The plaintiff was a tax payer who paid his taxes for decades....is he not entitled to SSI benefits or should he be punished for living in a "US territory"??

If only folks had the same energy to stop corruption by the oligarchs as they do with people of ZERO power......

We should have told those shitheads in Puerto Rico to go fuck themselves a long time ago. An island of welfare queens.

If it wasn't for our welfare they would have been a failed Communist state a long time ago.

But it has nothing to do with Social Security as you implied--I quote your post, When you already hate a government program like Social Security but don't have the will of the American people on your side to end it; because of how popular that program is -- next best thing is to try to prevent as many people as possible from receiving it. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is not Social Security. People in PR receive Social Security.

Let's play "What about me?". I paid into social security from 1978-2006 and 201-presnt. I am not eligible for disability because I was a public school teacher in a state with a retirement system. I cannot qualify for disability for another 2 1/2 years at a regular job, even though I can retire on SS in less than 2 years.

Do you lose Social Security benefits if you move to another country?
Key Takeaways. If you are a U.S. citizen who qualifies for retirement, disability, or survivors benefits, you can generally collect them while living outside the U.S. However, benefit payments cannot be made to recipients living in certain countries, such as Cuba and North Korea.Dec 23, 2020

If you are 62 you should be able to collect a reduced amount now or wait until 67 to collect it all. SS is based on your highest 40 quarters or 10 years of SS earnings. If you meet age requirements you should be able to collect now.
