He was so obnoxious during his campaign there was a lot of speculation that he was doing it as a prank. A stupid man or a man with a bad personal history generally doesn't want to expose himself or his family to public scrutiny.

He refused a peaceful transition of the office
He recruited fake electors and pressured his VP to accept them over legitimate electors
