Ok, she's not the only one calling out Joy Reid. But this is good because Silverman is normally liberal. Still is, but I would say a more "normal" liberal as opposed to a hyper-partisan liberal.

The problem with partisans on both sides is that they never want to call each other out, nor acknowledge when someone on their side goes off the rails. That's why the most extreme of our own partisans side always seems to be in charge. They are the most outspoken, and the most outrageous, but no one on their side calls them on it. leaving their fellow partisans free to ignore all criticism.

So, I'll call out DeSantis for his plan to organize an armed force for Florida. Yes, many, if not most states already have "State Guards" which are not under the control of the federal government. My beloved Texas has one and it is a fine program that brings many benefits to its members while standing by to serve in an emergency. But the timing - as he is being touted by many as a possible Trump-backed candidate for President in 2024 - of his sudden desire for an armed force with himself as Commander in Chief - is clearly designed to be more triggering than practical.

An unexpected surprise from Sarah Silverman who normally is considered a leftist kook!
Good for her! How beyond the pale is Joy Reid when Sarah Silverman considers her a loose wheel
wobbling off the track most of the time?
Yes, Silverman was pretty funny in her early days, and I'm not gonna lie, she floats my boat.

But she got difficult to listen to when she injected too much leftist didactic into her "comedy."

The original militias served the governors of each state.

But you'd think the National Guard, with professional training, has replaced them.

Silverman is not "normally liberal". There are retards who have abused the world "socialist" to the point of meaninglessness, but Silverman is an actual true blue socialist.

So what exactly is the purpose of this proposed militia and what indicates a need for it?

DeSantis is proposing a volunteer force that would be out of the reach of the federal government.

The reason Socialist Silverman is not opposed to the idea is probably because some liberals believe in compulsory universal service. Rahm Emanuel, Obama's chief of staff, proposed such a thing in the past.

For a little more than half the states, it has.

The original idea of each state having its own military organization was twofold: to ensure a quick reaction if a foreign power invaded a state far from Washington, such as if the Frenchies invaded Alabama via the Gulf of Mexico and to remind the national government that the states are not helpless vassals with no way to defend themselves against tyranny.

Both of those reason are outdated.

With radar, satelites, etc., any invading force would be detected and confronted long before it reached landfall.

The Civil War decided once and for all that the states in fact are helpless vassals of the national government. The national government is not a creature of the states as envisioned in the Constitution.

The Texas State Guard has a program called "The Challenge Academy" that is a combination "boot camp," military school, adult life skills training, high school completion and GED preparation that is having phenomenal success with 16 - 18 year olds who have dropped out of school. No tuition, room and board provided. Only 14% of it's graduates go into the military, but nearly eighty percent go on to employment or higher education. Those were kids who were lost in the government schools and destined most likely for the government prisons.

Would that State Guard ever save Texas from the commies? Doubtful, but it may come in handy on the border or if there is another hippie insurrection in Austin.

I don't doubt that she is a socialist. But she is "normal," in that she is not a blind follower of the current liberal politically correct mindset.

State defense forces take years to build, as it's members can't come from the National Guard or recently discharged military.
Under 32 USC § 109(e), "A person may not become a member of a defense force ... if he is a member of a reserve component of the armed forces."
The DeSantis force would have to come from the trigger happy civilians.
And the only reason to suddenly create such forces, is to prevent them being "nationalized" by the commander-in-chief.

Not just professional training, but commonality of weapons, equipment, training and command. They were an augmentation to the standing army, not a rag-tag militia.

Actually the reason states had militias was for their own internal protection, and as a force that could be called by the into use on a national basis. The US would have never defeated the British had the militias been under the control of 13 different governors, instead of General George Washington.
