Landon Donovan said his San Diego Loyal "would not stand" for bigotry having left the pitch in protest after an alleged homophobic comment was aimed at midfielder Collin Martin, who is gay.

An opposition player from Phoenix Rising was accused of making the comment just before half-time in their second-tier USL Championship game.

Loyal players returned after the break but walked off when the referee blew his whistle, forfeiting a match they were leading 3-1 and ending their chances of reaching the play-offs.

Wow. This is such an encouraging story. They were winning the game and on their way to the play offs. But they walked off on a point of principle. Donovan never quite convinced me as a player but he has gone up, in my estimation, as a man.

Wow, this thread should have been started in the Breaking News forum.
That is just Earth shattering.

Hey, The fall Salmon season is winding down in the northwest, did anyone get out?

Handed the game over to the other team fighting for a play off spot.
That sure showed them!

I can't think of anything more stupid than paying attention to this nothing of a sporting event to begin with. Unless it's making a post about the non event.

So they threw away their chance to make the playoffs....

How gay of them!!!! :auiqs.jpg:

They walked off the field with no fans in the stands during a COVID year. Uh OK. Is the US going to qualify for the World Cup? If they do and one of their opponents uses a racial or homo slur will they walk off the field then?

I always knew that soccer was a gay orientated sport, I'm not really surprised at all.
Thoughtcrime
In the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), by George Orwell, the word thoughtcrime describes a person's politically unorthodox thoughts, such as unspoken beliefs and doubts that contradict the tenets of Ingsoc (English Socialism), the dominant ideology of Oceania. In the official language of Newspeak, the word crimethink describes the intellectual actions of a person who entertains and holds politically unacceptable thoughts; thus the government of the Party controls the speech, the actions, and the thoughts of the citizens of Oceania. In contemporary English usage, the word thoughtcrime describes beliefs that are contrary to accepted norms of society, and is used to describe theological concepts, such as disbelief and idolatry, and the rejection of an ideology.

Gee, I wonder what the homophobic comment was. Often, what is considered offensive is simply a true observation that the listener objects to.

Its about a group of athletes standing in unity against bigotry. Football players are usually too scared to come out because the reaction would kill their careers.
Officially there cant be more than 2 or 3 "out" players in the world but that figure is obviously an under reprsentation.
You really should be proud of Donovan. I cant think of a European equivalent.

Encouraging? That people can't deal with words in such a context and respond to an allegation in such a manner? They are there to play a game and win, not to nitpick about some passing comment someone who wants to upset them to his advantage may have said. He won and no social justice points were scored.

Throwing matches away is not the way to battle this problem. It's an idiotic thing to do that just takes Donovan and his team right out of the picture, as dull and petty as that picture is.

I assume that this happens every week and nothing gets done about it. Which is why Gay athletes are scared to come out. This was the moral thing to do and will be remembered long after the results of a game have been forgotten. They will make a film of this one day.

And you think forfeiting this game, while being up 3-1, is the only way to handle the situation?
That's idiotic! I know I don't give a crap about this soccer game (this minor league soccer game)
but supposedly the players should care.

There are lots of comedic movies where a team will insult someone on the other team to get them off their game (MASH comes to mind).
Looks like it really worked here. Landon Donovan is a fool.

Name calling ended a game? Why are athletes such sissies in 2020?
