This is a “thought experiment.” The poll question is a little complicated so please be patient. Anyone should, if they like, answer the question, both Americans and non-Americans. For the purpose of our experiment, no cherry-picking. Imagine that we were cohesive enough to trust each other and work together.

In order to accomplish these things:
1. Reduce reliance on foreign oil
2. Lower gasoline prices due to reduced demand
3. Put less oil money in the coffers of nations like Iran
4. Put less CO2 in the atmosphere

Would you voluntarily be willing to do these things:
1. Cut discretionary driving by 50 percent.
2. Drive at a maximum of 55 mph
3. Use only public transportation, if available, one day per week
4. Use only car pools, if possible, to get to and from work

This is what I wanted to post as a yes or no poll. But could not figure out how to do it, nor could I delete the broken poll entitled "Sacrifice."

Cut and paste is easy enough

Yes

Yes
3. Use only public transportation, if available, one day per week

Yes

I can enlarge if required. But others need to hop in and have a go.

Now if only Al Gore (and other enviro wackos) would do those

I drive a car that gets 40MPH does that count?

Yes, it counts. But would you be willing to do the things on the list? Drive 55, etc. In other words, would you be willing, if your fellow citizens joined you, to take nasty medicine in order to get better in the long run?

On Earth Day I drive with the muffler off - is that good?

I'm not so sure the intended accomplishments are all that valid, but to the extent they are, I'd do those things.

What I would not do is force others to do those things, or accept others forcing me to do those things.

You might be right. But what else can we do? I agree that no one should be forced to act for the betterment of all of us. But I think that with effective leadership that many of us would.
