When the US went into Afghanistan in 2001 it was a light footprint. We had some special forces and air support for the Northern Alliance.

Obama sent large numbers of US forces into Afghanistan in an attempt to recreate the success Bush had in Iraq with the surge. We went from a few thousand specops to over 100K regular forces under Obama. That was a colossally stupid decision. Afghanistan is not Iraq- you can have an entire division in the valley right next to you and not even know they're there.

From 2001-2009, US combat deaths in OEF were 590.

Post 2014 it became the NATO training mission, 94 deaths after that.
