If they flex their nuclear muscle, they will be annihilated

Russia is trying to have influence beyond what their economy and alliances warrant. As a kleptocracy it is doubtful that they can ever achieve parity with western democracies in influence because no one can trust them to hold up their end of any deal.

I agree with that assessment. They have a strong military that is one of the largest in the world. But they are far behind the US and China in terms of being a Super Power and Russia lacks an alliance that can compete with NATO

They have more to than enough firepower to completely Roast the entire North American continent.
