Mitt Romney In GOP Debate: Shut Down Federal Disaster Agency, Send Responsibility To The States

During a CNN debate at the height of the GOP primary, Mitt Romney was asked, in the context of the Joplin disaster and FEMA's cash crunch, whether the agency should be shuttered so that states can individually take over responsibility for disaster response.

"Absolutely," he said. "Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that's even better. Instead of thinking, in the federal budget, what we should cut, we should ask the opposite question, what should we keep?"

Here is how Mitt Romney would help on the east coast!:-bd

You stupid asshole.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

In the current system, there would be no choice. If states could keep that money instead of dumping it into failed agencies like FEMA....or if the state agencies administered federal aid....it would be 10 times better.

In Kansas, we had a whole town wiped out by a tornado.

Kathlene "the ass" Sebelius quipped she didn't have the Kanas arm of National Guard to help because it was in Iraq.

When in reality, the town was getting so much "help" it was turning it away. Contingents from all over the state were there to assist and so much food and clothing showed up that some was sent to other areas because it was to much.

You really are a lackey that needs to quit drinking the mind-numbing kool aid the left gives you.

We've been hearing about this super storm for what five days now?

How about people PREPARE and get ready for it?

naaaaah.. can't have that.

Let's go out and party. and blame others because we weren't ready.....

I am ready I bought 500 gal of gas and have almost 1,000 gal of propane for my generators.
Bought milk, bread, cigs, etc.

There are places expected to flood, followed by feet of snow, and downed power lines, with possible mudslides in the mountaintop removal areas.

These people are going to have trouble evacuating, assuming they have someplace to evacuate too. Just like NOLA, they don't have money for long hotel stays, too many don't have reliable transportation, and there aren't enough shelters.

Even if they do evacuate, their homes and property can't and will likely be damaged or destroyed. Most rural residents can't afford to rebuild.

They need help.

They worked hard and did all the right things trying to make a better life for themselves. They deserve help.

And you live in California, don't you? :)

Nothing like being prepared in case it takes a left turn.

From what I read, Romney didn't say they didn't deserve help nor did he say that if he was President they would not get it. He said that the states were the appropriate avenue for helping the citizens as opposed to the federal government.

Quite frankly, he is right. Regardless, the way things are set up it is the Federal government that will be footing the bill here. All that aside, what matters is that these people get help where needed and hopefully there won't be much needed.

However, the OP is being dishonest with its presentation of Mitt Romney's comments. Partisan bullshit. To bad we are stuck with it.

Don't know about that...

But these are the stakes for the federal government shrinkage that is being sponsored.
It will undoubtedly put more pressure on the States to raise those revenues on their own so look for higher sales, property and other local taxes and fee increases to pay for the cuts in the federal programs.

One popular topic is to bitch about the dead still on the voting rolls. Gee, cutting state workers is going to inhibit the ability to cater to such things. Cutting FEMA will do the same thing. State EOC is laughably ill prepared for most events like hurricanes, earthquakes, or events that create area commands such as oil spills or the like.

You pay now for preparation or you pay much more later for acute care. During an emergency, overtime accumulates quickly.

Do you ever deal in actual facts or is your brain only capable of the Facts as Barrack Obama presents them?

Romney would not deny aid to the East coast.
What he intends to do is make our states stronger and our government smaller, the way our founding fathers intended.
Wouldn't you like to see each state at their peak performance especially in emergencies??

Our federal government really handled the BP spill wonderfully.

I can't recall the crap they spewed about devastation for decades...don't hear much about it any more do we ?

If states don't have to support a bloated FEMA..they will have more money. And they certainly are the ones who know their territory better than the D.C. assholes.
