David Stockman: Mitt Romney and the Bain Drain - Newsweek and The Daily Beast

Except Mitt Romney was not a businessman; he was a master financial speculator who bought, sold, flipped, and stripped businesses. He did not build enterprises the old-fashioned way—out of inspiration, perspiration, and a long slog in the free market fostering a new product, service, or process of production. Instead, he spent his 15 years raising debt in prodigious amounts on Wall Street so that Bain could purchase the pots and pans and castoffs of corporate America, leverage them to the hilt, gussy them up as reborn “roll-ups,” and then deliver them back to Wall Street for resale—the faster the better.

His experience is in raising debt and that's what he will do if he's elected.

There is simply no other way for him to spend the enormous amounts he says he wants to spend.

Stick a fork in him......

He's Been Teabagged!!

"Mitt Romney is catching a lot of flak from his own side lately, which seems premature; this is by no means over. But let me say that even if he does spend election night weeping in his car elevator, his critics from the right are being unfair.

Yes, he's a pretty bad candidate...but the core problem is with his party, not with him.

What, after all, does Mr. Romney have to run on? True, he hasn't offered specifics on his economic policies, but that's because he can't. The party base demands tax cuts, but also demands that he pose as a deficit hawk; he can't do both in any coherent fashion without savaging Medicare and Social Security, yet he's actually trying to run on the claim that President Obama is the threat to Medicare. On fiscal matters, doubletalk and obfuscation are his only options.

And no, Paul Ryan, his running mate, didn't show that it can be done differently. His plan was, as I've documented many times, a fraud. Furthermore, he's basically a Beltway creation; the Ryan legend was based on the desire of Washington types to anoint a Serious, Honest Conservative; expose him to the wider scene, and it all falls apart.

Nor can Mr. Romney do the George W. Bush thing of running as America's defender against gay married terrorists.

First of all, that old standby, national security, isn't working. Between Mr. Bush's Iraq debacle and the fact that Mr. Obama was the one who got Osama bin Laden, the notion that only the G.O.P. will defend America is dead for the foreseeable future. And at this point social issues are cutting the wrong way: there are almost surely more affluent women who will vote against the party of Todd Akin than there are white working-class voters who will punish the Democrats for supporting gay marriage.

And underlying it all is the diminishing whiteness of the American electorate. This still might be a close election thanks to the weakness of the economy, and a better candidate than Mr. Romney might have had a better chance of pulling it off.

But the long-term fundamentals are not good for Republicans."

The world may indeed need greedy evil people like Mitt ROmney but that doesn't mean we have to make him President.

Could you morons please check the board before you double post an OP. There is one on this already.

Pull forward Hackman's argument. He does a lot of speculating and makes up his own standards. Otherwise, GFY. This is meaningless.

BTW: I don't think Romney wound up on the wrong end of an indictment like Hackman did.

He's a real authority....on ruining a company.

He went throguh Harvard Law and Business Schools concurrently.
He has indeed created thousands of jobs and met payrolls.

He is ten times more qualified than the Great Bamster.

I would also expect Romney to outsource America.

I would also expect Romney to outsource America.

Based on what exactly?

And considering Obama already is outsourcing America, how would it change anything if true?

Romney's primary function at Bain was NOT to build businesses and create jobs. It was to make money for the investors, regardless of the best methodology to accomplish that goal. His deals were essentially leveraged buyouts of existing firms. He often loaded them up with debt, and charged management fees while slashing jobs to cut costs. Bain was also known to engage in outsourcing.

I find the management fees to be ironic since he and his management team usually knew relatively little about the particular businesses they were taking over, and it's usually a good idea to be well versed in the fine points of running a business. Management skill is rarely enough if you want to compete against other companies who truly know the ins and outs of their craft.

But the point is that Romney is touting HIS experience, and HIS experience is in extracting value and profit from investments. It's not from building businesses and creating jobs.

While Obama has said he wants a bill to reward businesses that come back to the US and/or hire US citizens.

We'll never see R&R do that. RobMe has invested his money in other countries and has no reason to want to see American business do well. Just to opposite - he wants his own money to do well so will continue to invest in other countries.

Have we ever before had a presidential candidate as openly corrupt as romney? The tax havens and hiding the truth about his taxes as well as hiding the foreign places where he hides his money... The Swiss bank accounts and the Cayman Island hiding places.

The man is a crook and he openly flaunts it.

If a Dem did this, the rw's would be all screaming for answers.

He's running as a pub though, so its okay for him to be a crook.

We've seen that mindset several times. He has let it slip that he would let the auto industry go belly up, losing millions of jobs across the country in addition to the thousands in the manufacturing end.

He also said he wants people to lose their homes so the wealthy can buy them cheap and then rent them back to the owners.

And then there's his 47% speech. Anyone who has not watched all of it - you really should. Its frightening to see how this crook really thinks and talks when he thinks he's among friends.

Thanks to the rw's for agreeing with your candidate that he wants to cut off the legs of every middle class American. After all, the more of us that are homeless, the more rental real estate his cronies will own.

Way to go Mittens.

I don't think Romney is a crook. He probably stays scrupulously within the confines of the letter of the law as narrowly defined by highly paid lawyers whose specific job it is to look for ambiguity and devise ways to exploit it. But the spirit of the law? That's another matter altogether.

Which causes me to ask a question. Why is it that Romney got taxed at the capital gains rate? I ask because I've never heard Romney claim he was investing his OWN money in his investment ventures. My understanding is he was managing other investors money. So, wouldn't Romney's remuneration then fall under the heading of compensation for services rendered as opposed to a return on an investment of his own money?
