Unfortunately, your observation speaks to even larger historical events. 100 years ago, almost all Europeans countries were rent with violent civil discord that led to either authoritarian dictatorships or weak, ineffective democracies. Paradoxically, neither Stalin nor Hitler could have risen to absolute power without the impetus of destabilizing radical leftism.

Are you saying we needed radical leftism? Some nations were poorer and they were low taxed compared to today. Germany was a basket case from the penalties of losing WW 1. Russia had a less sadistic ruler in Lenin that led to Stalin as the glorified Communists took over that nation.
