Restaurant surcharge for Charlotte. NC event cries of racism

A Charlotte hotel restaurant and others are being investigated by the NC Attorney General for possible price gouging related to surcharges added to food bills during the CIAA Basketball tournament days.
Rather than go to the restaurants and ask if there are such surcharges added during other events, the AG is investigating based on bias.

Now, there is an underlying issue here.
That issue is that black customers tend to tip servers far less( if at all) than members of other groups.
This independent study from Cornell University shows the numbers.

WBTV interviewed black owned businesses in Charlotte on the matter. The general consensus is that blacks do indeed tend to be much more demanding and tip much less than others

I worked in food and beverage as a bartender in a popular sports bar. From personal experience while most of our black customers who were regular patrons tipped no lower than normal, many other one time or occasional black customers tipped very little or not at all.
I have a friend who is in restaurant management. He used to run a sports bar in Downtown Charlotte. During popular events such as SpeedStreet,( NASCAR themed street festival) 4th of July celebrations, many heavily attended conventions and other events, there would be upcharges to assist waitstaff and bartenders to insure they were being compensated properly for the additional work.
Parties of 5 or more per table were charged an additional 18% on their bill and the server was required to inform the customers ahead of time. This was company policy and in accordance with NC Law.
 
Almost all restaurants do this for tables of 6 or more or during special events drawing large crowds.
 
I have not worked food service since I was 15. I do go to restaurants a lot. Black diners are almost always very loud, start fights, and complain endlessly.

and we all know what kind of patrons will eat half of an expensive steak meal, then half way thru eating it, one of them will complain they dont like it, and demand a refund !!

If you watched the news report in the link provided, there was one black waitress interviewed that said black customers can be very demanding.....
In settings where that is true, it is normally where the customer is not a regular but a first time only time or an occasional customer.
Now I have never worked in a nightclub, but I know people that have bartended and been security in 'urban' night clubs. The bartenders both state that black customers, especially men tip very little or not at all.
Another group that is typically poor tippers are native southerners. They seem to resent the concept altogether.
 
Well, most of the blacks (though not all) I have been to dinner or lunch with, tend to tip less than me (then I usually tip between 15-30%).
and have a field day on all you can eat at Red Lobster. they will come in as a group of 4/5. and one of them will weight about 350 lbs.

Invariably they would come to the bar and complain about some issue with the service. After having consumed most or all of it, would complain the beer mug or wine glass was dirty. Or they'd complain the wait staff person covering the area where they were did not serve them( they would always order from the bar. Never a waiter..On and on....I got to the point where I had had it with their constant carping and other shenanigans. They got a lot of free stuff from us and enough was enough.
I told the manager, who is also a good friend what they were doing and that he could deal with them.
So with that, the husband comes up to the bar to complain about their meals. He told them "look, your tab is comped tonight". He then asked them to leave and not return.
The guy started to bloviate about making a stink in the media and suing. He and his witch left and never came back..These were Caucasians. I knew they had money because when I escorted them out, they got into a BMW.
They were in two words, scam artists.

oh yes, this is a very common scheme, even I spent a lot of my years working in the industry. I have seen it all !, and these customers just put the kitchen behind another 10/15 minutes when something is wrong with the meal, then the chef has to fix it during prime hours!

There used to be a place in North Myrtle Beach called Duff's Smorgasbord. It was a pay at the register, all you can eat...
We would watch as the black people and beach rednecks would pull the scams. They would come in with like 5 people and order two meals then share....With full plates.....Or they would have these large bags with them. They would make several trips and just take the plates of food and hide them in the bags.
My mother in law who was watching this go on stopped one of the workers and asked if he had seen that. The kid acted very cool about it. And told her these people dis this all the time. They would let it go on but if they tried to come back another time, they would refuse them service. The idea was to not cause a scene for the other customers. After all this is a resort. So you pretty much get the idea. IMO it was a smart way to handle the situation.

Luckily this was a sports bar so the menu wasn't that complicated.
The funny part was when my friend told them they could not come back, the guy said some to the effect that he could not treat a customer like that. My friend who has a quick wit told them that they weren't customers anymore so that sums it up.

we never had that happen at our place. But I was in a Golden Corral once and of course it was this linebacker sized black lady who grabbed her chest and started screaming. Now we knew this was nonsense because if a person is having a heart attack or a breathing issue, they CAN'T scream....They get her up in chair and ask if she's ok....There was a pause and then she really starts carrying on. Then literally throws herself on the floor. The cops came. Then she starts getting angry and wanted an ambulance.
Who knows what happened. I never read anything about a lawsuit in the paper or saw a TV news report about it.

and when it comes to any of those all you can eat seafood buffets, that doesnt mean you can eat ten pounds of sea-food and expect to feel fresh for the next 24 hours. Blacks will take advantage of the offer, then later will feel the effects. I had a manager endure a full shift of the runs the day after he did that.
 
Anyway..Back to the study and the incident in Charlotte.. I think the AG is going to find that there is no there there.
It's political....The CIAA Hops tournament is a tradition in Charlotte. The thing lasts 4 days and brings in maybe 15 to 20k people. I can tell you that while the city politicians get to put the "Hey look at us. See we love black people" feather in their cap, the local restaurant and bar managers and their staffs hate it.
MY friend that managed that downtown sports bar would have to literally beg people to work those shifts. Nobody wanted to work because they knew they were going to bust their asses and make no money. He even called me and says " I need you to come out of retirement" Figure of speech. I'm not that old. Its just that I hadn't tended bat in a number of years. He told me why....I was like "Ok, $100 minimum and we close at midnight( instead of the normal 2 am....He said "deal"...I get there and there is me him and two waitresses.
I wanted to kill him....We closed the kitchen at 6pm....We put away the well brands of liquor and served only call( more expensive) brands. And we served only import beer.
We put in a $10 cover charge per person at the door. We actually did ok. The customers we did have were pretty cool and did tip us fairly. Never more than 10% but that's more than we expected. The charge at the door kind of ran off the cheapskates.

No grape soda at out bar. But I'd make a purple sprite....Used grenadine and blue curacao( mixers non alco) to make it purple. The kids that came in with their parents loved it....
