Payroll taxes account for a significant amount of tax revenue being taken and as everyone knows patroll taxes are regressive, anyone making moe than $106,000 doesn't pay and payroll taxes. With that in mind, why are the dumb Repugs asking for middle class tax hike and lower taxes for the rich, we're the "equality" in that?

how about we simply do away with the payroll tax and enact a flat income tax. would that make you happier? Then everyone will be paying the same amount.

You just waking up to this? This has been the Republican complaint since 1936.

That and the lousy return. And the tontine aspect where only 1 in 10 would collect. Everyone else got shafted.

Even now, to exacerbate the regressive nature of the thing, minorities collect less than whites. Rich folks collect more of it back than poor folks, who again have the problem of not surviving to collect.

In effect, SS is the cool way to transfer money from the poor to the rich and from minority to white.

Considering that the payroll tax is regressive why do you Repugs complain about the rich shouldering most of the tax burden and saying that 50% of Americans don't pay taxes when fully 100% of the rich don't pay payroll taxes?

The Republicans are not blind.

They know exactly what they are doing.

Serving their masters.

Because we are talking about income tax.

That sould be obvious. Maybe you should think about it sometime.

Adding to my OP, the Repugs know that the poor and middle class pay a higher proportion of their taxes through sales taxes so the its a facking myth that 50% of Americans aren't paying taxes almost everyone is paying taxes, some paying proportionally more of a different tax than others. The rich don't pay a higher proportion of their taxes in sales taxes and pay no payroll taxes, how is the tax system unfair to them? If they have lower income taxes they get the luxury of taking advantage of all three, facking greed.

Sales taxes are collected by state and local governments.

The only federal taxes that directly affect the poor are tariffs on imported goods and taxes on phone service. (A temporary tax imposed in 1898 to pay for the Spanish American War. )

At the federal level there is the earned income credit. A way to get back taxes they didn't pay.

Maybe thats true, but only people that work get the EIC, including the rich, the tax system is still heavily in favor of the rich.

There is so much stupid here I don't know where to begin.

When most people quote the "50% pay no taxes" line, they usually state it as "federal income tax." In the case of the FEDERAL INCOME TAX, the 50% value has merit.

The payroll tax is a specifc tax that is for paying a specific outlay, SS benefits in a given year. The system is set up to be fair, so since your overall yearly benefit is capped when you retire, your contribution is capped as well. While that results in a higher % paid by lower income people, this is made up by the fact they will depend on SS for more of thier retirement income.

Remember most sales taxes do not include food, medicine, etc, so while everyone pays the same % on other items, poor people, who tend to spend most of thier income on nessesities, tend to pay less overall sales taxes then rich people, who by expeinsive shiny things that tend to have loads of taxes on them.

Of course you wont grasp this, because your are a useless huffpo-bot.

Q1. What is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)?

A1. The earned income credit (EITC) is a tax credit for certain people who work and have low wages. A tax credit usually means more money in your pocket. It reduces the amount of tax you owe. The EITC may also give you a refund.

Rich people dont get EIC. Hell middle class people dont get EIC. Try again.
