Republicans introduce plan to balance the budget in 5 years.

Tying this into a thread from the other day I don't think anyone cares about things like this any longer. They know it has zero chances of passing and that if there was a Republican president it wouldn't have been presented.

Both sides do this which is why it no longer has much impact. No one believes politicians any longer that claim something when they aren't in power that they didn't do when in power.

The 152-member House Republican Study Committee (RSC) released its alternative budget last week, and it was both a doozy and a political gift to Democrats. In that vein, House Republicans are now proposing slashing spending by $14 trillion over the next decade in order to balance the federal budget. Apparently, House Republicans forgot they were also the party that helped Trump single-handedly add nearly $8 trillion to the national debt during his four years in office, which was also pretty unprecedented.

House Republicans—nearly three-quarters of whom signed off on this plan—definitely have electoral advantages heading into next year, their ideas aren't one of them.

I'm sure plan B will be equally as inspiring.
This is the same shit they pulled during Oblama, notice they never told Trump to balance the budget...

They're counting on the electorate to have short memory spans, and based on recent events, there's little that says they should not.

Fiscal responsibility is only a concern when the opposition is in power

All the members of both major crime families.. er. parties should have that tattooed on their foreheads. that way we won't have to post threads like this one anymore.

I'll agree with half of that, I never take Democrats' talk of fiscal conservatism seriously. It is rather obvious when Democrats have hold of the presidency the congressional Republicans turn fiscal conservative.

However under Republicans presidents, it appears to me that Democrats are only concerned with getting a good chunk of money allocated to programs they favor. The Republicans williness to go along to get along contributes to that view that they lack the fiscal fortitude when they hold power.

Yep, I suspect that a sizable portion of the those who voted have already forgotten which party the candidates they voted for belong to and an even larger percentage can't remember the names of all the candidates they voted for.

Can't blame them though, our national political dialog is ugly, cynical, and full of unrepentant assholes, easier just to tune it all out.

Yep, every time we have GRID LOCK in Washington and are in the expansion phase of the Business Cycle the deficit shrinks.

Smaller increases in spending and increased economic activity resulting in higher tax revenue = lower deficits, who'd have thunk it?

Until they are back in the majority at which point they'll increase the debt by $30 trillion. The Republicans are complete frauds when it comes to living within our means.

I see a pattern of the debt going up no matter whos in office,, the deficit is irrelevant when that happens,,

First, let's get one thing straight. Nobody on the planet is more fiscally irresponsible (FR) than the democrats. They love to point at Trump, which is fair IMHO cuz he wasn't as FR as I and many other conservatives would have liked, but he still wasn't as ridiculous about spending as the democrats are/were. Almost every spending bill that he signed was higher than the GOP wanted, the democrats wanted the sun, the moon, and the stars in every frickin' spending bill that came up. There is a sizable GOP contingent in both chambers of the Congress that are FR, no matter who is in the WH. They wanted to spend much less on the COVID Relief Bills than the Dems did, and it didn't matter whether it was under Trump or Biden.

So, now it's a political issue, the Dem want to spend gobs of money that we ain't got and the GOP is going run against that. I think it's a good thing that SOMEBODY wants to rein in the out of control spending, and it sure as hell won't be the democrats so the issue should be up to the voters. It'd be nice if the 2 parties could do that in a bipartisan way, maybe not balance the budget but at least contain spending to like 3% growth year over year. But I think we all know that the democrats are not going to agree to that, and won't abide by it even if they signed up to it. It'll be interesting to see if we have a gov't shutdown over spending, and how that plays out with the voters next year.

And inflation appears to be rapidly rising, and interest payments are going to get really big. Some of that is intra-gov't, but most of it is not and pretty soon those IOUs that the SSA is holding are going to run out. Which means the intra-govt payments drop precipitously but the overall interest payments will continue to go up, both the principal and the interest rate. 10 years maybe, and then we're fucked. There's only one real way the Fed can't try to control inflation, and that's by constricting the money supply by raising the prime interest rates. And that means an economic contraction; we are a consumption economy and when the spending drops so does GDP. It ain't going to be pretty IMHO.

To start with, no spending without taxation. Democrats have always taxed before they spend. Republicans cut taxes and then go on a spending sprees. Raise taxes during boom times, lower them during recessions.

Cut military spending in half. If you're not going to be the world's police force, you need to cut the size of your military. Stop selling weapons to the rest of the world.

NO TAX CUTS UNTIL THE BUDGET IS BALANCED.

No Democrat has EVER crashed the US economy. Republicans have crashed the US economy 4 times in the last Century, three times in the past 40 years.

To claim that the Republicans are fiscally responsible is like saying Trump is the most honest, decent politician in history. Completely laughable.

Democrats in which country? Because that certainly hasn't been the case for the Democrats in the United States for the last several decades, they've engaged in deficit spending with as much gusto as the drunken sailors on the Republican side of the aisle have, which probably explains why we haven't had a balanced budget since 1969.

House Republicans Plan To Balance Budget. No, Really

GOPers get really fiscally responsible when, and only when, they are out of power and warmongering isn't on the table.

Democrats only held the House for the last 2 years of W's Administration, and the first 2 years of the Obama Administration, prior to 2018, and in both cases (2006, and 2018), they were saddled with MASSIVE Republican deficits when they walked in the door.

Under Bill Clinton, there were budget surpluses because of the success of the Clinton Agenda passed in the first two years of his Administration. Democrats held the House for 2 years before the Republicans took over, and Republicans held the House for the next 12 years, by which time, the fiscal gains of the Clinton Presidency were wiped out in unfunded programs like MediCare, Part D, two unfunded wars, and of course, the Bush tax cuts.

Bush's policies lead to the second Republican economic crash, and Democrats undid as much damage as possible before the Tea Party loons in the Gerrymandered House took over in 2012, and spent another 6 years refusing to tax, but spending on corporations continued unabated.

Obama reduced spending and increased taxes as best he could, created the most successful economic recovery in history, so of course Republicans had to crash that too.
