More than 40 percent of Latino voters across the country expressed concern that Democrats are embracing socialism and leftist policies, according to a survey included in a report released Tuesday by Equis, a Democratic research firm. Among those who voted for Trump, more than 70 percent were concerned. And Latino voters said they are more concerned with Democrats moving to the left than with Republicans embracing fascist and anti-democratic politics.

The report’s findings suggested that the attacks painting Democrats as supporters of socialism resonated well beyond Florida, which has a more conservative-leaning Cuban American population and a growing community of Venezuelans, Nicaraguans and other Latin Americans affected by socialism in their home countries. Instead, it was a national phenomenon that increased the likelihood of Latinos voting for Trump.

Some of the report’s key findings include: Trump’s policies on the economy and the coronavirus pandemic were popular among Latinos — including liberal Latinos. And his focus on those issues over immigration “unlocked a door and permission structure for Latinos to support Trump,” said Stephanie Valencia, co-founder and president of Equis.

Equis found that there was not a drop-off in worry about socialism as Latinos became more assimilated. Instead, it was the opposite — with fourth generation Latinos and beyond expressing more concern about socialism than earlier generations.

Equis asked Latino voters to identify what exactly they meant by concerns about socialism and leftist policies. The firm found that there isn’t a single, overriding fear, but some of the top concerns are that people will become lazy and dependent on the government, and the government will tell people what to do.

In South Texas, an area where Trump saw some of his biggest gains with Latinos, immigration stood out as a major issue. Equis found that more Latinos in the border region supported Trump’s immigration agenda — particularly increasing border security spending and limiting asylum seekers — than Latinos in urban centers.

The report also found that one of the most potent attacks on Democrats is that they take Latinos for granted. A majority of Latinos believe that Democrats forget Hispanics when it comes time to deliver for them, according to Equis’ survey of 11 battleground states.

Equis reported that, among Latinos, the Democratic Party continues to have some natural advantages, including being perceived as caring more about “people like you” and being “better for Hispanics.” But the firm reported that Democrats are now on even ground with Republicans in areas that once were essential to the party’s brand: valuing hard work, standing for the American Dream and helping American workers.

“It is incumbent on Democrats that they define themselves or continue to define themselves as the party that’s defending the American Dream, hard work and protecting the American worker — and that they show they can deliver for [Latinos],” Valencia said.

I'll take a LEGAL Mexican over a black any day of the week. Who am I kidding, I'll take an illegal one as well.

Latins from my experience aren't too bad around here. They tend to stick to themselves so I'd be ok with them on Republicans side.

The message is just as important as where they’re disseminating that message. Seventy percent of Hispanic Americans are getting their information from YouTube. One of the most successful ads the Trump campaign had in 2020 was an ad from a UFC fighter endorsing Trump. His message was that Democrats took Latinos for granted. That video has 34 million views. We have to think about platforms like YouTube and organic messengers that Latinos are consuming every day. Who is the progressive Joe Rogan?
