German Renewable Energy Insanity: Shutting Down a 5 Year Old Coal Plant, No Plan to Fill the Energy Gap

h/t Krishna Gans – According to the German climate website Kalte Sonne, the renewables obsessed German and city of Hamburg governments intend to shut down local coal and nuclear power plants, but have no serious plan to make up the resulting energy shortfall.

“The prosperity of an industrial society depends to a large extent on whether it succeeds in generating or procuring the required energy and keeping it available. In such a way that it is firstly available to companies and consumers with a secure supply, secondly: economically, thirdly: sustainably and environmentally friendly … Hamburg also and above all has many electricity-intensive large consumers and the city is proud to have them at the location. She cannot and does not want to do without them. Whether steel, copper and aluminum, but also aircraft construction or scientific companies such as the German electron synchrotron, DESY, they would all have a difficult time in Hamburg without a reliable and inexpensive power supply …reliably and with a high degree of utilization of what we can extract from the earth. “

They're going after nuclear too?

Morons...

Nuclear is vital if we're serious about breaking our fossil fuel dependence any time soon.

Nuclear is probably the only viable way to eliminate burning fossil fuels for energy generation

Solar will play a role too. It gets cheaper and more efficient every year. It's only a matter of time before it outpaces fossil fuels in many ways.

Not really...solar and wind generate barley enough electricity to meet any demand plus its very wasteful and toxic
You should look into the disposal of solar panels and windmill turbine blades ....and they wanna expand it a million fold....they can barley bury used windmill and solar panels today ....not recyclable...oh yeah so green

Here in the United States youre never replacing fossil fuels until quite a few technologies advance quite a bit .....dont count on wind and solar ...its a wasteful pipe dream

Or go nuclear ...its the only viable affordable sane option

Hydroelectric is included in the renewables

Thats a large gap they wanna eliminate by 2050...no way

Keep on frackin is what I say

Obviously we have to keep using oil until we can realistically transition completely, which is a mountain of an undertaking. You're wrong about solar though. Costs are dropping and efficiency is rising at an unbelievable rate. To me it seems obvious that eventually getting energy directly from the source will be more efficient than getting it from fossil fuels.

How much have cost dropped?and efficiency....generation wise?
How big are the improvements over the last 10 years ?
Wait theyre miniscule ...like thier contribution to the grids
Hasn't made a dent in muh charts...

I'm not wrong about solar panels not being recyclable and toxic

Nuclear is much more viable and cleaner in the long run
Or maybe we should just keep going with natural gas as a main source thats wildly abundant and relatively clean

After all their is no scientific evidence at all that man is changing the global climate with his miniscule co2 output

Its just a crazy conspiracy theory

You are aware that Germany is a nett energy exporter. Between 10-15% of German produced electricity is exported top other EU member states. So it closes down a coal mine or two, big deal.
