The oil leases were from private owners during the o years. O shut down a lot of the public leases which most oil companies don't want to mess with anyway because theres about 10x the bureaucracy.

Regarding the oil use from other nations, that was more important in another era. Oil fluctuates too much on political agendas as we see.

And relative to its cost before the 1970 Oil Crisis it is selling at about 35% of it costs then. When the cartels ramp up the cost per gallon past $7.20 then we can talk about depleting our own reserves. Until then it's just stupid to plunder it just to benefit a few big companies who have zero loyalty to this country. The faster we use up the ME oil reserves the better off we are in 10 years, far better off, as it denies that many more barrels to our enemies.

Actually at $2 an acre for leases it's a great steal for them compared to private leases. It's robbery of the public in fact.
