The only good thing about Latin American politics is that change is constant. While America spent two miserable terms suffering through Obama and it is far from clear that the prog nightmare is over, a fresh wind is blowing south of the border. The "Chavez" coalition has come apart with Argentina's Kirchner indicted, the Venezuelan regime on its last legs and and Brazil's Rousseff impeached.

The departures of Kirchner and Rousseff are good for America. Kirchner kept flirting with restarting a war with the UK. Rousseff was anti-American in predictable ways. But they're also good for the Jewish community.

...

It would be an interesting quirk of history that an Arab Christian president would repair relations with Israel broken by Rousseff. Meanwhile the left is predictably furious.

...

The bickering, not rare between leftist leaders and more conservative governments at a time when much of the region is moving to the right, comes as centrist Michel Temer, Rousseff's vice president, assumes Brazil's presidency and scrambles to pull the economy out of its worst recession since the 1930s.

"Who are Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia and Nicaragua to teach about democracy?" wrote Eliane Cantanhede, a prominent columnist for the Estado do S. Paulo newspaper. "Cuba?! Venezuela?!"

Good question.

Israel deals 'hardest blow' to Hamas since 2014 Gaza war
15 July `18 - Israel has carried out its biggest attack against Hamas militant targets in Gaza since the war in 2014, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says.
The raids were a response to dozens of rockets fired into Israel, he said. Hamas said a truce had been agreed, but further exchanges have been reported. Palestinian health officials said two people were killed and 12 injured in an air strike in Gaza City on Saturday. Three Israelis were hurt by one of the rockets fired on Israel.

Palestinian witnesses say a building was struck in Gaza City - Israel says it hit militant training sites

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had struck facilities used by Hamas, which dominates Gaza, including a battalion headquarters in Beit Lahia, a training camp located in a high-rise building in the al-Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza, weapons storage facilities and rocket launchers. "In consultation with the minister of defence, the chief of staff and the top security command of the state of Israel, we have decided on strong action against Hamas terrorism," Mr Netanyahu said in a video statement. "The IDF have struck Hamas with the hardest blow since Operation Protective Edge and we will increase the strength of our attacks as necessary," he added, referring to the 2014 conflict.

More than 90 rockets are reported to have fallen in Israel

However, Palestinian officials said a ceasefire had now been agreed thanks to "Egyptian and international efforts". Israel has not commented on the report, although Reuters quoted an unnamed Israeli defence official a saying "only the facts on the ground will dictate our further response". One rocket hit a home in the town of Sderot. Three people suffered shrapnel wounds. The attacks come amid an escalation of violence in the region in recent months. They coincided with mass demonstrations along the border which saw thousands of Palestinians express their support for the declared right of Palestinian refugees to return to their ancestral homes in what is now Israel - as well as demanding an end to the blockade of Gaza imposed by Israel and Egypt.

RE: Israel and Palestine → Relations with Israel
※→ et al,

I'll tell you what, this question threw me for a loop. When you think of what factors are important when assessing diplomatic and foreign relations, (setting aside for the moment the Defence and Security Assistance issues) I immediately think of economic trading partners. I'll admit that when it came to understanding Israeli Import/Export and who Israel's major trading partners were, I wasn't even close. (When I think of diamonds, I don't think of Israel.)

First, there are a couple of charts I think you should glance at: •• Visualizations •• I was very wrong on what the major export categories were, as well as the distribution of imports. But let's me not diverse into the economics, but let's look at the trading partners themselves: Of course, as you might expect, Israel single largest trading partner is America → shipping about 35% of its exports to the US. That is a bit more than a significant amount. What I thought was a bit odd was that Israel imports more than twice as much from the State of Palestine (1.2%) than it does from Jordan (0.51%); which is more than the entirety of the remaining Middle East/Persian Gulf combined. So, who is it that are the significant trading partners with Israel, requiring the best diplomatic relations:

IMPORT-wise Overall → North America: 38%, Asia: 33%, UK+EU: 24%
  1. US
  2. BENELUX (Belgium, Hollan, Luxembourg)
  3. UK
  4. Switzerland
  5. Germany

EXPORT-wise Overall → UK+EU: 49%, Asia: 33%, North America: 14%
  1. US
  2. Hong Kong
  3. China
  4. Palestine
  5. India

These 36 Countries Don’t Recognize Israel
May 2, 2015
Foreign_relations_of_Israel_Map.png

Map created by Davshul via Wikimedia

While there are 36 countries that claim "not to recognize Israel," that is essentially a political fallacy for all but a handful. Many of these countries have spoken about Israel in the media, in the UN, and signed resolutions condemning Israel. Under international law, that is recognition. And that is like sight once seen, you cannot unsee it.

ARTICLE 6

The recognition of a state merely signifies that the state which recognizes it accepts the personality of the other with all the rights and duties determined by international law. Recognition is unconditional and irrevocable.

ARTICLE 7

The recognition of a state may be express or tacit. The latter results from any act which implies the intention of recognizing the new state.

Of its immediate neighbors, Israel only enjoys a formal Peace (by Treaty) arrangement with Egypt; and to a lesser extent Jordan. In 1983, a Treaty was almost established between the Lebanese and Israel; but, through coercion and intimidation, the peaceful settlement was sabotaged.

To an extent, Israel's political and diplomatic position is one of a low profile. While the is very competitive economically, outstripping all but a couple Arab League States (Qatar and UAE), and outstrips all the Arab Regional states in terms of Human Development. This has set the stage, politically, for a non-hostile diplomatic foundation with most of the EU. With the exploitation of the Levant Oil/Gas fields, most of the EU is more concerned with commercial trade than bickering over trivial Palestinian Politics.

Most Respectfully,
R
