People aren't going to movies like they used to, punishing Hollywood's America-haters

We used to go to the movies every week, without fail. But Leftists/socialists/America-haters are so rich, so filthy, they turned us off. The last two or three movies we went to see were so bad, we walked out and got our money back. They lie about America, they lie about our military, they lie about how serially racist Americans are, they lie about how awful men are while celebrating the mentally ill, which so many of Hollywood Glitterati are themselves. Transgenders, homosexuals, pedophiles, drug addicts, a thoroughly sick bunch, but hey, they've got money, so......

Only 12 theaters are closing, instead of all 542. More's the pity.

"Regal Cinemas’ parent company, Cineworld, is closing down theater locations as part of an ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, according to Deadline. 12 theaters across the country, out of a total of 542, will be shut down as the company wades through financial difficulties brought about by Covid-19 closures. The move is based on projections that the theater industry won’t return to pre-pandemic income until at least 2025."

Or, it could just be with the pandemic killing its walk in business and the rise of streaming eating into its profits that could have done it.....
But no..it's being "woke". :auiqs.jpg:

The Left is losing the culture.

No one wants their rot anymore.

Theaters have been going down since the VCR became affordable. I do not miss the high prices, sticky floors, people talking, kids screaming, sound way too loud, having to miss 10 minutes of the movie going to the bathroom, not being able to smoke, the long drive home in the middle of the night and all the other hassles. I do kind of miss the drive-ins though.

Celebrating people losing their jobs makes the OP a loser.

Last movie we went to see was the Mr. Rogers movie with Tom Hanks in 2018. The cost of the movie, food and popcorn is not worth my money. We’d rather spend our entertainment dollars elsewhere and seeing a movie on the big screen is not that big of a deal.

The pandemic shifted how we watch and the younger crowd would rather spend their dollars not sitting in a theater. People don’t go to movies anymore.

We have a two-screen Drive-In in my AO and it was bumping during the covid....New movie selection sucked so they started showing 80s era films....We went one night and they ran Better Off Dead and Top Gun......They had to turn folks away, it was a blast.

The only difference was the concession stand was closed.

I stopped going to the movies maybe about 15 years ago precisely because I can't stand the morons in Hollywood & their woke ideology.
Ronaflu had nothing to do with it, it was their constant poking their noses into things they have no clue about.
If I want to see a movie, I wait till it comes out to see it at home.

Hollywood is full of weirdos, pervs, groomers & know-nothing idiots.
Richard Pryor & Marlon Brando were lovers- says all you need to know about the disgusting filth they actually are & the products they push on the public

Not to mention you can get a 70' TV for under a grand. And even if you financed it the payments would be less than a night out at the movies for a couple.

It is a perfect storm with no single cause.
1) Streaming rentals. Why pay the money to sit in an uncomfortable, often FREEZING theater when you can pay $6 and watch it in the comfort of your home on a big screen TV, and if you want, a sound system as good as the theater.
2) Covid. People got use to not going out.
3) Inflation. People don't have nearly the discretionary cash they did just a few years ago.
4) And finally - you bet - movies today suck. There are still good ones, but they are outnumbered at minimum 10 - 1 by cheap, weird flashy crap like the recent Elvis movie.

Movie Theaters are going by the way of the old Drive-In Movies. A by gone.
And probably will never return.

Are you still bitchin' about the shutting down of the nickelodeon, five and dime, TG&Y, whale oil use, and riding horses as a major means of transportation also? I bet you still raise your fist and shake it at names like J. Paul Getty.

Whether movies are good or not is totally subjective.

Blaming the closing of these theaters on the reasons above is pretty silly. Do some people choose not to go for the reasons the OP lists? Certainly. But if those reasons were so profound there would be a lot more than just a dozen theaters closing their doors.

These are the theaters which are closing:

  • Anaheim Hills 14
  • Calabasas Stadium 6
  • Westpark 8 in Los Angeles
  • Crow Canyon Stadium 6 in San Francisco
  • Broadway Faire in Fresno
  • Richland Crossing Stadium in Philadelphia
  • Parkway Plaza Stadium 12 in Seattle
  • Greenville Grande Stadium in North Carolina
  • Middleburg Town Square Stadium 16 in Cleveland-Akron
  • Sherwood Stadium 10 in Portland, OR
  • Colonnade Stadium 14 in Las Vegas
  • Amarillo Star Stadium 14 in Texas

All of those theaters were already struggling. The impacts of Covid certainly did them no favors. Not only did these theaters close during Covid, but new movies weren't being made in the interim. Filming delays, which are normal and easily dealt with, had severe impacts, as well, to wit: Production delays moved the release of "Top Gun: Maverick" from 2019 into 2020, and that got cancelled because of Covid. The movie was released two years late. Things like this have severe negative impacts.

And, as has already been mentioned, people became comfortable not going out and spending money. While we'll occasionally go to the movie theater for the "big screen" experience of a particular movie, we have every streaming service known to man and an 86" television on which to watch them.

We don't go to the movies as much not because of how Hollywood has decided to, as the OP so eloquently states, "lie about America, they lie about our military, they lie about how serially racist Americans are, they lie about how awful men are while celebrating the mentally ill". We go simply because we adjusted our lives to deal with the realities of Covid and discovered that we enjoy those adjustments.

As I said earlier, if the reasons for these 12 theaters being shuttered were truly as the OP claims, there'd be a lot more than 12 of them...

Is that it or just more people watching from home as TVs have gotten huge?

Not only have they gotten huge, they've become damn affordable.

A buddy of mine has an 85" television which, if I recall correctly, he paid in the neighborhood on eight grand for some years back. I bought three 86" televisions for under two grand a pop...

Drive-ins are still around. Some new have been built, and some are being reopened. Just have to look for them.
