Domino's is launching a pizza delivery robot car

"New York (CNN)The robots are coming, and they're bringing pizza.
This week, Domino's is rolling out a robot car delivery service to select customers in Houston. For those who opt in, their pies will arrive in a fully autonomous vehicle made by Nuro.
Here's how it works: Customers in the Woodland Heights neighborhood of Houston can choose robot delivery and receive texts with updates on the car's location and a numerical code that can be used to retrieve the order. Once the car arrives, the customer enters the number on the bot's touchscreen, and the car doors open up to serve the food.
Nuro's robot car was the first completely autonomous, human-free on-road delivery vehicle to receive regulatory approval from the US Department of Transportation last year, Domino's said."

I'd rather it be brought to the door by a person than have to go out to the thing.

Yea that thing would totally get run over by a train getting into in my neighborhood.

It's cold and snowing outside. I order a pizza so I don't have to drive. Once it gets there, I have to get on my boots, put on my heavy coat, tromp outside through the snow. If I'm going to do all that, I might as well just get the damn thing myself.

I don't even use the self checkout at the grocery store. When you use automation to get things done, an American loses a job opportunity. Very few people think of that.

They expect me to do the cashiers job but not get paid, they don't offer any discounts if you do it that way, and they don't have to hire as many people.

A couple of years ago I went to see my family doctor. I went to the counter I always went to, but nobody was behind it and the lights were out. I got out my iPhone to see if I had the wrong day or something. A woman walked from the waiting room and escorted me to the kiosk. I told her nobody warned me about this, so I didn't bring my reading glasses and can't see the stupid screen. She helped me fill it out and I sat in the waiting room.

A few minutes later an elderly couple did the same thing, and the woman showed them to the kiosk. The man had a fit. He said he refuses to mess around with any computer. The woman said that's how the clinic is doing things from now on. He replied they are just going to have to find another doctor at another facility. He was fuming.

Today when I see my doctor I go to the desk as I always have. I guess they got so many complaints about the kiosks that they shut them all down.

What's the point? Would Domino rather invest 10 g in these contraptions so they don't have to pay some kid minimum wage? I wonder how heavy these things are. My guess is that most of them will end up in electronic chop shops/

When I was younger I delivered pizza part-time for a year or so. I had a full-time job so I could only work on Friday nights and weekends. You don't make any money in hourly pay, you make money on tips.

Therefore I do see customers using these things. For one, it's new and everybody will want to try it. Two, you don't have to tip the pizzamobile. And lets face it, anybody who buys that cheap shit pizza is no big spender. When I get pizza, I get it from a real pizza parlor and pay for it.

I don't use them either because among other things they don't take cash.

Ours takes cash, but we all know how bill readers can be. But I just don't want to put anybody out of a job. I want to see these opportunities open up for younger people to get experience in the real working world. I'll pay more for my items, I don't care. To be honest, we don't have any full service gas stations in this state. They are all self-serve. If we did have a full-service station, I would buy gasoline from them. It's not that I'm lazy, it's because I would rather see more jobs for people.

I always do self checkout. Not my job to ensure jobs stay. Minimum wage jobs will be by the wayside soon they aren't all that essential.

Instead of Robots--maybe pizza hut better figure out how to make a good pizza instead. Their food has really gotten nasty over time.

When they first came out Pizza Hut was the best, but also more expensive than other places. As they lost business to crap pizza like Domino's, they realized Americans are so cheap they will even buy the crappiest food to save a buck, so they too started using substandard ingredients.

I kinda feel bad for younger people today. I was a kid when the Big Mac came out, the Whopper. They taste nothing today like they did back then when it was a much higher quality. The only two FF places left that are still the same (and more expensive) are Wendy's and KFC. What I wouldn't pay today to have an original Big Mack or Whopper.
