Price Is No Longer an Obstacle to Clean Power

Economics may take us to net zero all on its own

The plummeting cost of low-carbon energy has already allowed many countries to decouple economic growth from emissions

Speaking at the COP26 summit last year, Richa Sharma, leader of the Indian delegation, was quick to emphasise that India had a right to burn fossil fuels, telling delegates: “The meagre carbon budget is first and foremost the right and entitlement of developing countries.” This emphasis on allocating the bulk of remaining “carbon space” to countries that have not yet reaped the benefits of years of fossil-fuelled economic growth is central to the climate justice movement.

But all such good intentions are rapidly being overtaken by simple economics.
In 2009, coal was still an attractive option for countries looking for affordable energy, its average costs coming in well below renewables.

But by 2020, both wind and solar had become far cheaper per unit of energy. In some markets, capital-intensive new installations even worked out cheaper than existing coal plants. In response, India’s appetite for coal has quickly waned. In 2019, the International Energy Agency forecast that the country’s installed capacity of coal would grow by around 80 per cent between 2018 and 2040. A year later, they revised that to just 10%.

Fracking already allowed the US to do this.

All the calculations for solar include the fact they don't operate at night... OF COURSE!
Wind does blow at night.
Battery tech and the above two sources get better every year.
Solar has gotten 85% more efficient since 2010. It really doesn't need incentives any more except to offset the influence of Big Oil.
That's what has enabled the Green Revolution we are seeing.

Oil, as we see right now, is controlled by the worst possible countries. OPEC+Ru.
Thus a good part of our current inflation.
Solar, wind, battery, will never go to $150 a barrel. On the contrary, they will get more efficient yet. (somewhat like Moore's Law)

Switching to Renewable energy could save Trillions - study

Offshore wind farm

The Cost of Green energy like Wind and Solar has been Falling for Decades

Switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy could save the world as much as $12tn (£10.2tn) by 2050, an Oxford University study says.

The report said it was wrong and pessimistic to claim that moving quickly towards cleaner energy sources was expensive.
Gas prices have soared on mounting concerns over energy supplies. But the researchers say that going green now makes economic sense because of the falling cost of renewables.

"Even if you're a climate denier, you should be on board with what we're advocating," Prof Doyne Farmer from the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School told BBC News. "Our central conclusion is that we should go full speed ahead with the green energy transition because it's going to save us money," he said.

Just like computer chips/'Moore's Law' tech things have been getting dramatically more efficient.

Fine admission. The rest makes very plain that their love affair with nukes still amounts to shooting themselves in the foot to keep providing their rich industrialists the sort of welfare to which they've grown accustomed.

Yes, they're shooting themselves in the foot while they export huge amounts of electricity that green energy lover Britain was importing.

No wonder France is struggling after wasting so much energy trying to electrify a landmass. I've heard it's all Steers and Pigdogs over there other than your odd stiff Parrot.

Simple math. Energy DEMAND has plateaued in recent years. There's only a need to replace "aged-out" plants. So there's no OVERALL big building of ADDITIONAL capacity.

So by the theory of fractions -- being the LARGEST addition to a VERY SMALL NUMBER -- is only a factoid you'd read on some solar/wind fanboy site.

And it's not the state of Texas. COmpanies from EVERYWHERE are building them in Texas because wind still has REALLY LARGE SUBSIDIES.

Lower natural gas prices in 2019 led to declines in wholesale electricity prices in most areas of the country. This was not the case in Texas, where day-ahead, around-the-clock wholesale electricity prices averaged $38 per megawatt-hour (MWh), up 13% from their 2018 average.

Download Report PDF
The root cause of this cost increase were the massive distortions in Texas’ wholesale electricity market caused by renewable energy subsidies. Since 2006, wind- and solar-power generators in Texas have received about $19.4 billion in subsidies from federal, state, and local governments. In 2019, renewable subsidies totaled almost $2.4 billion.

Not only did Texans have to pay $3.1 billion for the electricity generated from renewable sources last year, they had to cover most of the cost of $2.4 billion in renewable energy subsidies that generators received. That equals about $67.9 per MWh for the 81.1 million MWhs generated by wind and solar generators last year. These costs show up on tax bills as well as electricity bills.

Key Points
Texas wholesale electricity prices jumped 13% in 2019, compared to drops from 15% to 30% in other markets

Retail electric prices in Texas increased by 6.8% last year, more than the 1.3% increase in U.S. retail prices

Renewable energy subsides in Texas last year cost $2.4 billion, and have totaled $19.4 billion since 2006

Wind and solar generation have increased this year by 5,432,001 MWh. Natural gas, which has increased only 2,352,049, and coal has decreased by 7,351,523 Meh

The all-in cost of wind and solar generation in Texas was $67.9 per MWh

------------------------------------------------

Why NOT take those subsidies? Taxpayers are footing the bill. And these subsidies aren't the BIGGEST "HIDDEN" cost of wind and solar. THAT would be the FACT that for EVERY MWatt of either that you BUILD -- You need to BUILD ANOTHER GENERATION to back that up -- when the "sun dont shine or the wind dont blow". And as AN INVESTOR in a Texas wind boom -- THAT is not YOUR problem at all. It's somebody else's.
Cheap energy, wink wink

We didn't see any GDP growth since 2007 while our CO2 emissions declined?
Do you know what GDP is? Can you spell GDP?
I am familiar with GDP. Your post was:

Abu Afak : Economics may take us to net zero all on its own The plummeting cost of low-carbon energy has already allowed many countries to decouple economic growth from emissions

Toddsterpatriot: Fracking already allowed the US to do this.

Fracking did not allow the decoupling of economic growth from emissions since fracking would drive both values upward.

So, your quoted line here is incorrect. Clever repartee will not make fix that.

Dear Low IQ MAGAt Meme Moron.
This isn't about Obama and Pelosi, it's about the Math of renewables.
Anything ON topic?

[And please avoid Conspiracy websites like 'ManhattanContrarian' a retired lawyer, below I've seen posted twice in the last 24 hours. It's Not a response to the BBC, Oxford, the IEA, etc)
Who’s math?

Cheap? Please explain what it means for math to be cheap.
Playing stupid I didn’t figure from you. Wow, still refusing to answer how your math makes green energy cheap!
