"For nine minutes, an Alameda police officer tried to engage a man in a park who didn’t appear to be harming anyone. Seven minutes later, 26-year-old Mario Gonzalez was unresponsive, after three officers and a civilian parking employee held him down. Officers James Fisher, Eric McKinley and Cameron Leahy confronted Gonzalez after receiving two calls, the first from an Alameda resident who said Gonzalez was muttering to himself outside the front gate to his house.

A second caller told dispatch that Gonzalez was lingering in Scout Park at the corner of Oak and Powell streets with what the caller suspected might be stolen bottles of alcohol. McKinley spoke to Gonzalez for nine minutes before he and the other officers attempted to arrest him, according to a review of body-camera footage released Tuesday afternoon. It shows the police restraining Gonzalez for five minutes, at which point he went limp."

Looks to me like the initial officer did everything in his power to talk to Gonzales and try to de-escalate the situation and calm him down.....Clearly the guy was either drunk or mentally ill..and if you are going to wander around the streets drunk or mentally ill like that; stuff like this is going to happen...and if you die from it, oh well...don't be a drunk..He clearly also had some medical issues as well which most likely caused his death.
