...you can train 24/7 and be very smart--mistakes will happen no matter what...it's like combat [ not like making a cheese sandwich ] = you can train all you want but it is not like the REAL thing
...pilots are very smart and get paid mucho $$$$$..they train on million $ simulators...have THOUSANDS of hours of flight time --but they still hundreds of people

Hmm.. That's a comedy but perhaps a more accurate portrayal of policing in the US minus the really dark sickening bits.

Going back to the Floyd Trial. It was said at the start that Chauvin was just following police procedure. This was later rejected by his boss and others in their evidence.
Seems very strange that neither Chauvin nor his colleagues knew the correct procedure.

I read that police basic training in the US varies widely in Sth Carolina it's around 16 months & in California 24. London 3 years and we don't need firearm training.

I think it comes down to both the quality of both the applicants and the training whether you end up with a police service (they are called a service and not a force now in the UK)
that is fit for purpose.

Our laws do that. Our unfair system does that. On one side of town the police arrest a guy for selling people a cigarette. On the other side we have a ton of financial crimes that get ignored.

A street cop doesn't have the training or resources to investigate insider trading or corporate embezzlement. Those crimes aren't ignored, people are prosecuted all the time. But, those complex cases involve several agencies and entirely different kinds of specialists and sometimes take years to prosecute. When those people are arrested, they typically don't jack up with police.

On the other hand, trained accounting fraud and e-crime specialists aren't driving around the streets handing out tickets for speeding.

They see a guy get jumped by the cops and killed simply because he was minding his own business walking home from the store and wanted left alone. Nothing was done to those who did that.

Training is awesome if the right lessons have been learned and passed on. The problems arise when the wrong lessons are adapted.

Since it is in the news let’s start with Use of Force. Especially lethal force. Most departments study the worst LEO shootouts to show the officers what they can do instead. To survive. And win. If they find themselves in that situation sometime in the future. One of the most famous is the Miami FBI shootout.

This shootout marked the end of Revolvers being the weapon of choice for LEO’s. It was the beginning of the Wondernine era, and the inspiration for the .40 Cal pistols.

So let’s talk about what happened. And what went wrong. Better yet. I’ll let Paul Harrell do it.



If you bothered to watch the video you saw Paul explain the way that every single Agent engaged the baddies. The distance. The weapon, the location and shooting position. What you also noticed is every agent missed. Their bullets did not hit the target. The most powerful ammo out of the most awesome weapon is ineffective if it misses the target.

Plenty of courage. Weak on planning. And ineffective execution.

Now here is where one change to LEO’s I have long advocated comes into play. The Aviation Accident style of investigation.

In another thread I said the investigation into Sully said he made a few mistakes. One was failing to flip the “ditch switch” which closes all valves and openings on the bottom of the plane to help it float longer.

The investigation determined that this switch wouldn’t have made a difference since the skin had cracked and the water was coming in anyway. But the point is this. They found fault with one of the greatest examples of airmanship in the decade.

The investigations are designed to do that. Find every nit picky way that it could be done better. Even things that don’t matter or are irrelevant. They are identified and mentioned.

Why does this matter? Because by learning all we can we can make it better for the rest of the cops. If we stop learning the wrong lessons. If we stop looking to justify each incident and instead look to learn all we can we can save lives. Cops and citizens.

Or we can continue making each encounter a game of Russian Roulette.
