I have a pair of them hitting my suet feeder every day this past week.

It's funny watching them work.

One will peck the shit out of the cake and chunks will fall and the other will land and eat the chunks.

After they leave the little Junco "snowbirds" will come in and clean up the rest. It's a fascinating process to sit and watch.

I am relieved to see that this thread was not pornographic in nature. 🤓

These acorn woodpeckers have been going crazy the last month or so... I think they are confused due to the warmer than normal weather...

And if they decide to start knocking on your siding, the noise is crazy.

they peck at the metal roof on my barn......~S~

I've watched them in the woods attack a rotted tree looking for bugs and they can make the chips fly!

You seldom see one on the ground.

most amazing is their bill don't seem to dull down, their head goes 100 miles and hour and the don't get headaches

when I was in the east yes junco' in winter, blue jays, cardinals and that creeper that goes down the tree head first

I miss that entertainment

They stripped literally all the bark off our 14 dying Ash trees before we cut them all down. They got their bellies full from the Emerald Ash borer and the larve.

14? ash live for ages.........did you have an entire groove? that' sad, that's a huge amount of greenery and shade gone, you won't be alive to see them that large even if you replanted
that ash is worth $$, makes great baseball bats and furniture, too nice to just toss in a fireplace

Did ya all hear the one about the Pileated Woodpecker?

It wasn’t very good. It was a knock knock joke.

The Emerald Ash Borer has devastated our entire area. In fact, most of central MN is now infected. The wood is trashed after the bugs infect the trees.
Our neighbor lost 30 trees.
Our neighborhood looks entirely different after so many trees gone.
Some pics before the cutting...

sad, yes my uncle lives in PA and he lost some nice trees due to bug, not sure if they were ash

all that green canopy lost due to bugs.......you would think there might be some defense, spray, natural predator

sucks but that wood has value, not worth the landscape and shade but real value

Yeah man. Might need to see a urologist about it.

Oh... you were talking about birds. My bad.

The MN DNR won't allow the sale of infected wood. The wood must be destroyed as any larve can infect more trees. It was all hauled off to a disposal site.
The bug is an invasive species, so no predators except the woodpeckers, but when they show up, the trees are already done for. There is an expensive treatment, but has to be caught immediately and results are typically not worth the cost.
I actually like that I no longer have to deal with all the leaves anymore.
