One of the issues is the empowered to dress in more frightening clothing. The police were just that at one time. Then they became "law enforcement officers" Why? Because we can be arrested for damn near anything in the criminal code. They wear nazi style outfits which are a form of intimidation to the general public. The military can soften part of their image a bit. The police need to do it a lot more.

Don't know much about standard issue uniforms. You have fatigues and class A nothing in between. You will not wear class A when you arrive in a duece and a half.

Back in the 70's there was a middle ground. Fatigues were the work uniform, khaki uniforms were the middle ground, usually worn worn when going off post or dealing with the public and Class A's were for formal occasions. Not sure when they dropped the khaki uniforms
