Our Economy Can't Take This, Get it Over With

---When stores and stadiums are empty and our cities look like ghost towns, consumer spending—the lifeblood of the economy—will lessen by hundreds of billions if not trillions of dollars. The implosion in spending will lead to millions of fewer jobs, to even less spending—a downward spiral with no obvious end in sight.---

Just do what our moms did when one kid had chicken pox, expose it to everyone and get it over with. We can't afford to let Democrats ruin our economy.

How many lives are you personally willing to sacrifice for Trump? Give us a hard number. Which of your relatives or loved ones will you give over to appease your god?

I'm not too concerned about yours.
Well, thats what makes me a liberal and you a Trump sucking psychophant. I DO care about yours even when you apparently don't.

Could you not?

No. I will continue to care about others, even you and your family. I sincerely hope you are staying safe, maintaining safe distances, staying home and washing your hands frequently.

Wash your hands like you just got done cutting jalapenos and are about to take your contacts out!
You don't seem to care if anyone goes bankrupt and can no longer afford a roof over their heads or food on the table.

Of course I do...I just care more that they are alive to worry about it.
Horseshit. You would send this economy into a Great Depression and watch thousands of people starve if that would help you defeat Trump.
You are projecting. I don't give a shit about Trump. I would happily give him four more years if not another American had to die of this virus. You, on the other hand, are more than willing to sacrifice thousands of lives because you know the economy was all he had.
yeah, right, you would give him 4 more years if the sun came up in the West instead of the East. You aren't convincing, douchebag. A few thaousand people are going to die no matter what Trump does.

I've asked you turds several times when this shutdown is supposed to end. None of you gives an answer. We all know that's because you want it to continue until the economy is destroyed. How many Americans do you suppose support such a policy?

When do you propose to end the shutdown?
It ends when we flatten the curve.
How will that be determined? How do you know we haven't done that already?

We haven't. China is working on it.

21112.jpeg
In other words, you don't have a fucking clue.
We doubled the number of deaths, what, overnight? We are not flattering the curve.

"Flattering"?

Eh?
If you believe those numbers from China, I have a bridge to sell you.

Okay, so you're proving my point. It's far too soon to lift any of the stay at home orders. We need to flatten our very steep rise. More tests would help with that.

It didn't take long for you to adopt the new Trump narrative. Which is basically, "We can't jeopardize my re-election for the sake of thousands of lives."

What are you suggesting? That tanking the economy is tremendous because you think it will hurt Trump?

If 30% of the people are starving, which is what they have estimated, that just isn't that healthy , berg. That's a helluva price for the American people to pay for your partisan aims.

I agree But my question is how to we get accurate stats when many have mild symptoms and don’t want to waste resources both test kits and doctor time to get tested.

When do you propose to end the shutdown?

No one knows when the shutdown will end for this outbreak. Anyone that implies that will happen by Easter or the end of April is just speculation, something no leader should be doing. A shutdown will end in a state when two things occur. The hospitals have sufficient resources to handle more cases and the number of new cases is falling. That will not occur at the same time in every state.

This is only the first outbreak of the virus. We will not eradicate the virus this month or this year. That opportunity is long gone due to lack of planning and lack resources. Hopefully, the virus will prove to be seasonal like other respiratory viruses giving us a respite this summer to prepare for a surge of cases in the Fall. I would bet it will be a year before we have effective antivirals, and at least 2 years before we have the public vaccinated, assuming the scientist come up with one. Then the cornavirus will be just one of a number of respiratory viruses such as the flu and viral pneumonia that we have deal with.

Gee, a mass consumption rape humanity and the planet paradigm showing signs of unsustainability? Who knew? Apparently your capitalists know. They got their socialism again.
We could do that if we wanted to deal with the deaths of as much as 3 to 5 million in the US, a pretty high price to pay for a quick end to a recession.

There is no plan and that is the problem. What the idiot Trump needs to do is lock down the country until the April 14th and require anyone sick or contact with sick to stay home 14 days after exposure plus isolate older Americans for a few months. Or at least put forth a plan of his own. Right now he is playing a game of whack a mole like a retard. This will get us no where and we are wasting time. Trump better put out a plan soon.

Why Trump? You have a governor who you hold much more sway over than you do at a national level. You know Trump proposed locking down NY, CT and NJ and the democrat hero Cuomo shot that down immediately as totally illegal.

So stick that in your partisan pipe and smoke it.
Whack a mole by state?! Are you insane? So basically you approve of having no plan. Surprise. There was nothing substantively partisan in my post except for properly calling Trump an idiot. He is. Still I am looking to him as the President to implement a national plan in this time of crisis. Apparently you think we don’t need one.
If the governor of the state that is currently the epicenter of the outbreak claims Trump has no legal authority to lock down his state... what exactly do you expect Trump to do. Cuomo literally called it an act of war.

Trump wanted to do it, the Democrats fought him on it.

You need a civics class. You understand we are not a centralised government right.

We are a federation of states. Hence the FEDERAL government. If the state fights the federal government what is Trump going to do? Call out the Army? Arrest the Governor? Appoint a new state government?

Get your head out of your ass and look around. We aren't a dictatorship. If you want a lockdown...you best be putting pressure on CUOMO...not Trump.
Keep kissing his ass until we go broke and millions of old people die. The fact is the guy and the administration has no plan. He’s just winging it.

You never answered the question.

If the governor refuses to lock down Like Governor Cuomo just did...what do you expect Trump to do?
I’m fine if you don’t like my plan. I gave it a few minutes of thought by myself after nailing my wife. Trump is the one who should have a plan crafted by experts but doesn’t have a clue.
Trump is not the key figure, the governors are. The CDC via the president creates guidelines but it's up to the governors in each state to decide what level of isolation and resources is needed. Congress allocates funds to soften the economic blow and provide resources for the states, however, the battle will be won state by state.

Keep in mind this is just the first outbreak. We will see the number of new cases gradually leveling off to social distancing and the seasonal nature of respiratory viruses this summer. Hospitals will get the resources they need to deal with more cases in the fall which will surely come and many businesses will be open. Coronavirus will be around for years, so we're going have to get to use to it. The good news is with each outbreak, we will have more tools to fight virus and the impact on the economy will decrease. Eventually, we have a vaccine to prevent the disease and anti-virals to treat it.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I agree with much of it. I do think the Federal Government needs to lead with a long term plan of what it expects each state to do. Guidelines that have an end game in mind are more likely going to work. Massive testing will improve our ability to control it as well.

First you claim "No one knows when the shutdown will end for this outbreak." Then you start making predictions about when it will end - all of them massively pessimistic. You proved exactly what I'm talking about: TDS morons are all trying to generate hysteria. The fact is that the number of new cases is already declining, as is the number of new deaths.

You don't need doctors to administer tests

And having a "symptom generated" protocol isn't going to provide NEAR enough information. We need enough tests to test everyone...multiple times

Big task huh? It's about the only thing that will have the desired effect

Massive testing plus tests for coronavirus antibodies will make the difference in the fight. Testing for coronavirus antibodies will make it possible for people with natural or acquired immunity to go back to work. It might be a little soon to start that but it certainly is not too soon to get it ready for the Fall. So far, we have been reactive to the virus but what wins the battle is being proactive.

Does Social Distancing Matter?
This paper develops and implements a method to monetize the impact of moderate social distancing on deaths from COVID-19. Using the Ferguson et al. (2020) simulation model of COVID-19’s spread and mortality impacts in the United States, we project that 3-4 months of moderate distancing beginning in late March 2020 would save 1.7 million lives by October 1. Of the lives saved, 630,000 are due to avoided overwhelming of hospital intensive care units. Using the projected age-specific reductions in death and age-varying estimates of the United States Government’s value of a statistical life, we find that the mortality benefits of social distancing are about $8 trillion or $60,000 per US household. Roughly 90% of the monetized benefits are projected to accrue to people age 50 or older. Overall, the analysis suggests that social distancing initiatives and policies in response to the COVID-19 epidemic have substantial economic benefits.

So you don't trust that Cuomo and Newsom can flatten the curve?

Unemployment is going to skyrocket and a record number of businesses, mostly restaurants and hair salons and small one-off clothing stores, are going to permanently close. This $2.2T package isn't going to save us but it will soften the hit.
Done right it can save those businesses (an mine) Are you not confident that Trump can get it done right?
I'm not worried either way.

People have known for centuries that staying away from sick people in an epidemic prevents the spread of disease. Since there is no way of knowing whose sick, social distancing is all we got.
