KIEV: Both Ukraine and the pro-Russian rebels pledged on Saturday that they are going to respect a ceasefire due to come into force, after fierce fighting plunged the truce into doubt.

Under a peace plan signed between Kiev and the rebels in Minsk on Thursday after marathon talks between the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France, a ceasefire will start in war-torn east Ukraine at midnight 2200 GMT Saturday (02:00am on Sunday UAE time). Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko confirmed he remained ready to abide by the deal in a phone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande.

(Reuters) - Shelling suddenly stopped at midnight in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk after President Petro Poroshenko gave the order to government forces to cease firing at midnight in line with a peace agreement reached last Thursday.

Reuters correspondent Anton Zverev reported heavy artillery and rocket fire roughly every five seconds in the run-up to ceasefire time, but then the big guns fell silent just seconds after midnight.
