The Placemat Problem | Opinion | The Harvard Crimson

The Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at Harvard University distributed what it is calling “Holiday Placemats for Social Justice” on campus to help freshmen students navigate difficult conversations when they return home for Christmas break.

The placemat [. . .] offers students tips for talking to their family members about controversial topics such as “Black Murders in the Street,” “House Master Title” and “Islamophobia/Refugees.” The placemat, divided into four possible topics of conversation, provides students with a series of sample questions they may encounter when they return home to their families along with an acceptable response to each question.

What do you think BYU and Notre Dame and Baylor do?

Just like Harvard, all are private institutions, bear.

So you want to put alt right indoctrination in private institutions?

They are not private, they accept government money for tuition and research. As such they follow federal rules.

I suppose it would never occur to one such as you to have no indoctrination in our universities.

Perhaps they should teach kids how to think (not what to think).

Sheesh!

To me, they can tell the students what to think as much as they want. What makes them think that they have the ability to make them students actually pay any attention to it? Its like looking for something that you want to hear on the radio. If you don't like what one station is playing, look for another one. We still have the freedom to. :) :) :)

God bless you and them students always!!! :) :) :)

Baylor University | A Nationally Ranked Christian University ...

Baylor University is a private Christian University and a nationally ranked research institution. The University provides a vibrant campus community for more than ...

Similarly, in the real world, the notion of private universities being somehow separate and independent from the obligations of public institutions by virtue of their funding sources is also not entirely accurate. Private universities, even those with exceptional endowments, exist to large extent on the public’s account. Their endowments succeed by virtue of public tax exemptions. The gifts that build the endowment enjoy a public tax exemption. The property and campuses of these private universities enjoy a public tax exemption. The federal government provides extensive tax supported need based financial aid to private institutions, revenue that subsidizes those institutions’ tuition and fess.

Private research universities, like their public counterparts, receive federal grants and contracts whose overhead pays some portion of the research costs, a direct taxpayer subsidy. Private universities in many states receive a per-student subsidy for every in-state student they enroll, again a public subsidy. And on occasion, private universities succeed in persuading their states to invest in economic development activities that support the academic objectives of the private institution (either by subsidizing research or helping defray the costs of facilities).

America’s private institutions are a public trust. While they can evade many of the considerable bureaucratic and regulatory costs and obligations that public universities endure, they are nonetheless, publicly subsidized institutions with private governance.

Show where I said any such nonsense. Grow up.

I said that they are private institutions, saveliberty's argument is false, and I believe that is the mission of our institutions of higher learning: to encourage critical thinking skills.

But the government has no power over private institutions on teaching matters.

And if the placemats don't work and your family won't agree with you, demand a safe space where you don't have to be challenged.
