In this episode they deal with the prophet Samuel's insistence that Saul attack a rather helpless tribe and slaughter every man, woman, and child. Saul spares the king (to bring him back as a trophy), and loses God's blessing.
This is probably one of the most controversial parts of the Bible, God's insistence that the Hebrews engage in genocide.
Many have lost faith, especially Jews, because of these Bible stories that depict God as cruel and unforgiving.
Christians have the Gospels to fall back on, a depiction of God as a loving, merciful God who forgives sinners and condemns hypocrites.
