Obama's Brutal Gaffe: Low Gas Prices Cratered Our Economy

Last night, President Barack Obama dropped the biggest campaign gaffe of the season – only the media wasn’t watching. It happened during his testy exchange with Mitt Romney over gas prices. First, Obama denied that he’d done anything about denying licenses on oil and gas; he backed off of that shortly. Then he denied that production on federal land was down; he was lying. Finally, Romney hit him with this devastating line:

The proof of whether a strategy is working or not is what the price is that you're paying at the pump. If you're paying less than you paid a year or two ago, why, then, the strategy is working. But you're paying more. When the president took office, the price of gasoline here in Nassau County was about $1.86 a gallon. Now, it's $4.00 a gallon.

Obama’s response was horrendous:

Well, think about what the governor -- think about what the governor just said. He said when I took office, the price of gasoline was $1.80, $1.86. Why is that? Because the economy was on the verge of collapse, because we were about to go through the worst recession since the Great Depression, as a consequence of some of the same policies that Governor Romney's now promoting. So, it's conceivable that Governor Romney could bring down gas prices because with his policies, we might be back in that same mess.

In other words, bringing down gas prices by drilling creates economic recession. That was Obama’s argument.

Does anyone think this president understands basic economics?

The price of gas depends on supply and demand as well as Opec reducing supplies to create higher prices, oil speculation and a lot more. One factor is because the economy was doing poorly and people were not demanding as much gas due to job loss, curtailing unnecessary driving, and lots of other factors related to the poor economy.

Obama did not say that the reverse was the case at all! Or that to lower prices depended on the economy taking a dip again. Gas prices are going to be higher in better times because people have jobs to go to, demanding more gas purchasing, recreational activities, etc.

Get real! And actually bringing down gas prices by drilling is only a tiny fraction of the lowering cost of gasoline. As a matter of fact, if there is a glut of gasoline on the market, it will eventually cause related (refinery and other) jobs to be curtailed, causing another problem of higher unemployment.

You might as well be replying to a brick wall. The OP is a partisan hack that only parrots what he is fed by nutbar sites like the one he linked to. The OP has no interest in facts outside of the false rubbish that is fed to him by fellow kooks.

If the OP even reads your post, I seriously doubt he would be able to comprehend the correct facts you just stated.

These nutters would be dangerous if they actually had a functioning brain.

You Teabaggers should have "discovered" politics a little earlier (rather than right after a Black-dude moved into the Oval Office.)

Stupid Fuckin' Teabaggers

Yeah...he was saying that the collapse was the cause of the lower gas prices....not the other way around.....

You know there's another thread on critical thinking.....You do realize that critical thinking extends beyond Obama, right? I mean, I know the voices on the radio don't say that, and in fact limit their own critical thinking skills to Obama and other Dems....but Critical thinking means you can and do use it across the board.

Try it sometime.....it's good for the brain.....perhaps eat some fish too....brain food and all....

I don't think Obama was entirely wrong. World oil consumption was falling as a result of weakening economies. That had an affect on prices. The rest of his blather is bullshit, though.

Wrong, prices hovered around 1.50 a gallon in the nineties when the economy was fine and were around 2.00 a gallon from 2000-2006 when the economy was still okay.

Yes, he did.

Wow. Just...wow. What a moron.

How is it that any normal person can not listen to this bozo and say, "WTF?!"

I know how leftists can do it. I was asking about normal people.

"Energy was a big topic in the second presidential debate. The word alone was mentioned 40 times. Gas or gasoline were mentioned 30 times. At one point, Mitt Romney told the audience that President Obama is not “Mr. Gas,” which was meant as an insult but would usually be a compliment in any other setting.

Unfortunately, the debate offered a simplistic view of a complex topic. The most egregious example was the attack that Romney made on the Obama administration’s energy policy, which he boiled down to one key argument: Energy policies are measured solely by the price that consumers pay, and since prices for gasoline, heating oil, and electricity have all risen over the last four years, President Obama’s energy policy has failed. “The proof of whether a strategy is working or not is what the price is that you’re paying at the pump,” Romney said.

That’s good sloganeering, but it’s not accurate.

By such a measure, rising gasoline prices, the energy policy of every president since LBJ—save for Ronald Reagan—has failed. When Reagan took office in 1981, the U.S. was still reeling from the 1979 oil shock, as well as from double-digit inflation. Over the next eight years, as global oil supplies loosened and inflation was tamed, gasoline prices dropped.

You’d think a man as business savvy as Romney would be more attuned to the fact that markets, not politicians, determine the price of crude oil and therefore gasoline."

More people buying food from dollar stores
Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Supermarkets are the main place U.S. consumers buy groceries, but dollar stores are gaining momentum as are drug and convenience stores, researchers say.
Perception Research Services International said their annual shopper research survey found 91 percent of those surveyed said they purchased groceries in the past three months at a supermarket, down from 92 percent last year. Mass merchandisers were the supermarket's largest competitive threat, with 73 percent purchasing groceries there in the last three months, the survey suggested.

The survey found 35 percent said they shopped for food in a dollar stores in the last three months, compared to 32 percent in 2011, 47 percent said they shopped in a drug store for food in the last three months, compared to 46 percent last year and and 24 percent shopped in a convenience store for food, compared to 23 percent last year.

Consumers purchased beverages and food generally at the same rate across mass merchandisers and dollar stores, but cleaning supplies and personal care items were purchased more often at dollar stores.

More supply will not drop prices, that sure makes a lot of sense. In an alternate reality.

The dumbfuck Obamination claimed we have high gas prices under him because the economy is booming.

He is fucking clueless like his lemming followers or he is a evil piece of shit lying through his buckteeth.
