Pentagon to relax rules on personal religious wear — including beards, turbans

The Pentagon on Wednesday is expected to announce widespread changes to rules governing religious items and religion-based physical attributes that service members can maintain while in uniform — including beards, some religious tattoos, and turbans.

NBC News obtained an early draft of the new Department of Defense instruction which states that the military will make every effort to accommodate “individual expressions of sincerely held beliefs” (conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs) of service members.

It goes on to say that unless doing so could have an adverse impact on military readiness, unit cohesion, good order and discipline, health and safety, or any other military requirement, commanders can grant service members special permission to display their religious articles while in uniform.

Requests for religious accommodation can be denied when the “needs of mission accomplishment outweigh the needs of the service member,” the directive will explain.

Earlier this month, a major in the U.S. Army who is a Sikh American took his case to staffers on the Hill, explaining how he and other Sikhs should be able to serve in uniform and still maintain their religious beliefs, including wearing turbans and unshorn hair, including beards.

I remember Sikhs serving when I was in and this was back in the mid '80s. They were not only wearing Turbins, but also carried their daggers as part of their uniform.

Everybody should dress the same. There should be no distinctions in the military. Jews?...A military hat is as good as a kippah and serves the same purpose

Not dress uniform, standard OD green.

The daggers were part of their Class A uniform, not the ODs.

And yes, they had their beards.

Restrictions due to uniform regulations. Prior to the 1980s, the United States Armed Forces allowed the wearing of beards while in uniform. However, due to a change in regulations the U.S. armed forces stopped allowing for the wearing of beards in uniform, except for those who commenced their service in the military before 1986. As the beard is a requirement according to the Rehat Maryada, the current regulation, has created a regulatory barrier that has kept Sikhs from serving in the United States Armed Forces in large numbers since. Prior to this change in regulation, two Sikhs who served in the US military were Col. Arjinderpal Singh Sekhon and Col. G. B. Singh.


Specialist Lamba, United States Army (2010)In April 2009, Sikh Army Captain Kamaljeet S. Kalsi, a doctor, with the help of the Sikh Coalition, filed an objection to the Inspector General and the Department of Defense to be allowed to continue to serve with his religious apparel intact. Joined in the filing of the object was one Army Reserve Second Lieutenant Tejdeep Singh Rattan, a dentist.CPT Kalsi had joined the Army via its Health Professions Scholarship Program and had been reassured by the recruiter that wearing the uniform while retaining his religious required appearance and apparel would not be a problem. CPT Kalsi had even served in uniform without any problems at West Point and Travis Air Force Base. Yet, a problem arose in early 2009 when the Pentagon told CPT Kalsi and 2LT Rattan that they would be called to Active Duty and would need to shave their beard and stop wearing their turbans.

Since this change is being made, I have wondered why women are allowed to keep their long hair and men aren't?

I'm fairly sure that applied to the Navy only. I cannot remember a time when beards were allowed in any other service.

I couldn't care less whether they serve or not. Just like fags. I served in the Army for 22 years. If your "religion" dictates that you wear an article of clothing that is not part of the prescribed uniform then NO, you shouldn't serve.

It's called "Unit Cohesion". When you serve, you are part of a unit. You no longer bleed red - you bleed green. If that isn't acceptable - stay the hell away. This is what happens to the military when young white men and young black men no longer join the military.
