I keep hearing the left say Romney was a moderate so then that would have made him a viable alternative to many who voted for Obama. Had they done that and Romney won, we might have actually seen some progress. Now...it's unlikely.

I think the votes are there for a few token tax increases, if it comes along with substantial cuts in spending. The Republicans can refuse to deal once again, but this time doing so may cost them the House in two years. Voters are fed up and want to see progress of some kind. If they don't see it happening, they will start laying blame on someone and I believe it will be House Republicans who pay the price. On the other hand, if the Republicans play ball or even look like they are trying, they will be more than safe for the midterms.
