New York School's Rules Give Failing Kids Credits Toward Graduation | Fox News

* Students who get failing scores of 50 to 55 in class will “automatically” get 15 points for a passing 65 to 70 grade if they pass a Regents exam. Kids who score a minimum 65 on the Regents “should receive a passing grade” in the class. The same practice forced a Bronx principal to resign.

this si just awful;;

nder the rules:

* Students who get failing scores of 50 to 55 in class will “automatically” get 15 points for a passing 65 to 70 grade if they pass a Regents exam. Kids who score a minimum 65 on the Regents “should receive a passing grade” in the class. The same practice forced a Bronx principal to resign.

* A final grade of 60 to 64 “will be changed automatically” to a passing 65.

* Students who fail a class “will be assigned ... a work product not to exceed five pages” or “alternative project.” Livid teachers say pupils who cut class or blew off studying get a “packet” of work or take an online multiple-choice “credit recovery” program.

“The message is loud and clear: Don’t worry if you don’t attend school -- we’ll just give you an easy way to make up the credit,” a staffer said. “What does that say to the kids who actually do the class work, tests, projects and homework?”

and there are thank god opposing voices;

“The message is loud and clear: Don’t worry if you don’t attend school -- we’ll just give you an easy way to make up the credit,” a staffer said. “What does that say to the kids who actually do the class work, tests, projects and homework?”

David Bloomfield, an education professor at Brooklyn College, said such policies make a mockery of “real learning and subject mastery.”

“This is simply a phony process for getting kids undeserved credits,” he said.

And for those who are minority or "special" (gay, single parent etc) - this insanity continues in many colleges. NO college is going to get into a habit of expelling minority and special case students - so they coast through and get a degree - thereby lowering the value of an education for everyone else exponentially.

Government bubble #3 well underway.
As it is in liberal land.

You know...I have made several threads about the ludicrous taxpayer supported grants - and I don't believe someone on the left has made a post in one yet.

I was waiting for that.

A college education know is meaningless unless it is an Ivy League. Get ready for big bucks. If you are on a Pell Grant for the poor ,minorities or the disabled, your Diploma will read: DO NOT HIRE

Exceptions are specialized medicine (for now). They are still not easy to get into - very picky grade requirements and hard as hell pre-req's.
Nursing on the other hand...holy hell...some of the people I know that got a nursing degree...help us all.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Years ago the NYC system prevented any automatic failure for lack of attendance.

And don't think the Regents Exams mean too much anymore, either...
(Don't tell Traj how it's gone to hell in a handbasket since he left....he might think
it's because he left....)

Of course it is political....not an eduational basis.....
and in this arena, as in economics, it's Gresham's Law...bad education ideas drive out good ones....

...maybe Parkinson's Law, too.

"In most of Gallup's Governance surveys from 2001 through 2010, older generations of Americans were more likely than those in Generations X or Y to say they want government to sanction and protect traditional values. However, the percentage of young adults -- aged 18 to 34 -- who want government to promote traditional values has been steadily increasing in recent years, rising from 38% in 2008 to 53% today."
As a result -- and owing to declines in older adults' support for government's promoting traditional values -- young adults are now the most likely to favor it.

You can't keep the masses under control if they're educated enough to support themselves.
